Randall Monlux:  

Life Upon graduating from high school I spent the next few years in and out of community college. Finances being what they where at the time that’s what was available. Unfortunately community colleges, at that time at least, where not very compassionate to people who cannot rote memorize and being dyslexic memorization is not an option. I also am one of those people who need to be in a solid relationship before being able to focus on other things. In 1978 I joined the navy as a submariner. Here I studied and worked in electronics and communications systems. I spent about half of my time in Hawaii and most of my tour in the pacific fleet. In Hawaii I enjoyed the surf and sea along with travel opportunities when they came up. Once back on the mainland I got back into skiing with a vengeance. The last nine months I spent on the east coast and in the med. Traveled around as much as I could ski whenever and wherever. During my travel time back and forth across the country I enjoyed skiing a good portion of the Rockies. After getting out of the Navy in 84 I sucked up a few more credits at Edmonds CC and started working at Eldec Corporation as a Developmental Engineering Tech. The PC’s had just hit the work environment and my life took a sudden change for the better. I was now able to communicate in a written manner that did not leave me physically nauseated after 2 pages of writing, Dyslexia has it pluses and minuses writing was a definite minus up to this point any of you who ever saw my penmanship or understands , No I wasn’t trying to practice writing prescriptions. I enjoyed my work but the pay well sucked and I hated having my boss and some program managers get all the credit when we where constantly bailing their buts out of the fire. It always surprised me the inability of so many to understand the big picture and how the supply chain is critical to project and program management. I made the comment one time that I knew that I could a better job and some one made the comment prove it. Those of you that know or knew me understand that I consider those words a challenge and hey it could lead to more money. I had also at this time been in a long term on again off again relationship with a young lady. She was at the time working on her doctorate at UVA and I needed to know if it was or wasn’t going to work, should have figured it out when she never really wanted to ski. I am just a little passionate about skiing. Ladies it’s not always the man who is afraid of commitment. Well I went back and found out that it wasn’t going to work and needed to get on with my life. I came back to Washington and started contracting in high tech developing new projects. At his time I would come into a project and end up building the whole lab and infrastructure to support it. Being a contractor meant that in many ways I didn’t have to follow the political rules, just get the job done. I was also able to hone my skills on the pc. I was also able to work for 9-11 months and take 2-4 off and well go skiing! I was still missing that someone in my life that I could anchor my drive and initiative behind. The dating scene at this time was well scary to say the least. I was working at intermec at this time and working very closely with one engineer on a problem chit chatting back and forth about how things were going. Otto was originally from Czechoslovakia and when he went to visit his family at home after 20 years met a nice girl that he just couldn’t leave there and decided he better marry her. I had been to a couple of picnics with the group and he and his wife were there normally.
