Randall's Story
Hi Edgewood Classmates!
After reading several classmates' stories, I decided to share mine. After Edgewood I spent four years in civil engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. In 1970 my birthday was selected in the first national draft lottery - it's the only thing I have ever won! Rather than going to Vietnam with minimally-trained grunts, from 1970 to 1973 I volunteered for the United States Army Fifth Special Forces Group - Airborne (only about 1% of volunteers make it through the extensive training), often called the "Green Berets". In real life I was in the same unit as "Rambo" of movie fame (there were about 1,100 of us) I was a medic on a Special Forces "A-team" ( of TV fame) trained to perform surgery, dispense drugs, and operate a basic laboratory, as we were trained to operate in areas where medical doctors did not venture. It was quite an experience and, as luck would have it, the Fifth Group was withdrawn from Vietnam just as I was assigned to it after completion of my training. Whew! The Fifth Group then focused on the Middle East and Africa.
In late 1973 ...Expand for more
I returned to Cal Poly Pomona to earn degrees in biology and microbiology. After failing to get into medical school, I attended McGeorge law school in Sacramento, where I have practiced law since 1982. I have had my own law firm as a sole practitioner since 1991. I specialize in civil litigation (I'm one of those dreaded "trial attorneys"), but no criminal, real-estate, or divorces.
I enjoy golfing (I'm terrible at it) and have been a licensed pilot since 1968 with both instrument and commercial ratings. Last year a friend and I piloted his four-seat Mooney 201 from Oakland to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to attend the world's largest airshow. I have also SCUBA-dived throughout the world (I learned as a military diver in Special Forces).
On the domestic front, I have never been married, although I have been close a few times. Apparently I am not sufficiently "house-broken" as of yet, but I remain optimistic.
Does anyone have any information about Richard Schmidt or the rest of the "German-class" gang?
Please call me at (916) 446-1900 - it would be great to talk with you.
