Allen's Story

Life Though my first name has been changed, everyone sometime back when knew me by my middle name, Allen... After being moved from Buckner Children's Home in SE Dallas, I started out at Garland High School for a year or so, but circumstances uprooted me, putting me in for a short blip at R.L. Turner in Farmers Branch (NW Dallas), then dropped me off in Christ's Haven's Children's Home in Keller (though only there for 3 & 1/2 years, I consider it my childhood home) to finish the last three years at Keller High School. I graduated, of course, then continued with college for about a year in Arlington, until a fateful event nearly extinguished my life and forever changed it. On March 24th, 1989, six days after my 20th birthday, I was impacted by a large step-side catering truck at approximately 55 mph from behind while I was riding a bicycle. Though there was no spinal injury by the Grace of God, I had suffered severe closed head trauma resulting in epidural/subdural hematoma (severe hemorraging & damage at the surface and inner depth of the brain.) During the Care Flight, my heart ceased from the neurological trauma, but as the EMT's responded, my heart slowly came back. At the hospital, they performed a craniotomy (just to relieve the pressure & bleeding, and perform any minor repairs they could), and just waited. Their prognosis was dark, considering I had suffered 1/3 brain damage and was in a coma. Three days later, on a Sunday, I came out of the coma, and yet, according ...Expand for more
to the doctors, had the mind of a 10 year old (which, I now jokingly adjust my current age back by 10 years - he he...) My short term memory was nil then, considering I would greet a person again when my focus was off of them shortly then return to them. There was a lot of relearning, rewiring, and regrowth over the past near 20 years, and by the mercy, guidance, and grace of God, I have gone way beyond what doctors, specialists, and therapists have ever hoped for or expected (it was told that I may have to live in assisted care, and mostly work at a McDonalds, or grocery store.) I am very blessed today with wonderful & encouraging friends and family, as well as with experiences, education, aptitude, and attitude that I find immeasurable. I have been in the Technological Field for many years, I am currently working towards shifting my career to teaching, I am a prolific writer, and I have founded an organization that promotes local artisans, performers, musicians, & writers. I look forward to continuing my life in being a foster parent with my wife Nicole (who is just as committed to the next generation as I am, if not more), an educator, a mentor, an innovator, but most of all, a shining example of Christ as the man I was designed to be by God Almighty. I could not ask for anything more, for I am content in all, no matter what the circumstances may be. I wish the same blessings upon everyone. Go mbeannai Dia dhuit, agus siochan leat (May God bless you, and peace be with you)
