Randell's Story

Military I joined the Army actually before I graduated from high school. I went in on the delayed enlistment program. My cousin, Larry Adler, and I went in on the buddy system, which meant we would take basic training together and also our Advanced Individual Training. After AIT, I was sent to Germany, where I stayed for nineteen months. My job in the Army was repairing teletype machines and other communications equipment. After Germany, I came back home to Kentucky on ...Expand for more
leave and then went to Viet Nam. I was stationed just outside of Saigon. I was told before leaving for Viet Nam that my job was really needed over there, because the First Calvary Division was coming back to the U.S. and all their teletype equipment had to be checked out and either destroyed or given to the Vietnamese. I was there for five and a half months and saw two teletype machines the whole time I was there. I guess that's one reason I didn't make a career out of the military.
