Randy's Story
Life after high school got off to a hard start. Some of you might recall that me, Bill Atwell and Joe Morris were involved in a sand boarding accident just below Mugu Rock in November of 1966. You can see the site where the accident took place by opening the cover of our yearbook and looking at the sand dune in the upper right hand corner of the picture. I spent 2 years with multiple operations, a body cast and a back brace. Doctors told me I needed to got to college given I could not do any "real work" due to the injury. Moved back to Georgia (where our family originates) and attended a rural college. Loved college. Got a bachelors degree in philosophy and a masters in psychology. Married a young woman (Jan) from Wisconsin while in college. We then moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where I took a state job as a psychologist. While in Raleigh we had two daughters (Erin and Melisa). I also got ...Expand for more
a Ph.D. in psychology from North Carolina State University while we were there. After 15 years in Raleigh we moved to a tourist area in the mountains of North Carolina. The town is named Boone. I continued to work with the state in Western North Carolina as an upper level administrator and supervising psychologist. At 52 I retired. Jan retired when she was 53. Have traveled the world since. However, we both love to teach part time at the university level. We now teach one or two classes per semester at Appalachian State University. I teach psychology and Jan teaches english. Appalachian State is a fair sized university in Boone with 17,000 students.
Life after high school may have started rough, but has gone well since. Still married to Jan. Daughters are both married. One is an attorney and the other owns a computer business. Had my first grandchild in Decmber of 2009. Still love to travel.
