Randy's Story

Life I moved to California to finish College and talked into moving to New Mexico by an old Bentley classmate, Russ Clapham who I bumped into in Albuquerque on vacation. Back then New Mexico was wide open and I loved the high desert and Mesa's, the whole state had a population less than Belle Isle. Weather is still great year around, bright blue sky and sun, and it only snows hard in the mountains. If you have seen the movie Red Dawn, you have seen New Mexico, mostly around the Jemez Mountains. I explored the state non stop the first 10 years I was here, lots of deserted Ghost Towns, I mean real Ghost Towns, especially at night with the Santana winds blowing. Some old Confederate battle sites, Western Forts, and Indian Pueblos were all fun to spend time in. I worked as an Advertising Artist then went into sales and finance. Later I moved to the small suburb of Paradise Hills overlooking Albuquerque and some friends in the sheriff's department talked me into joining. I spent a lot of great years there; loved the work and didn't mind the hours which translated to underpaid and overworked. Working Patrol Division, I ran radar East from the Arizona border to Albuquerque along I-40 and when I happened t...Expand for more
o stop a Michigan driver, I gave them a warning and asked them to call Mom in Livonia and tell her her son was doing well and missed her. I got a lot of laughs and she got a lot of phone calls, some for years after. I finished as Undersheriff and finally getting weekends off, but patrol and detective work were always my favorite jobs. I always missed the green grass, trees, and water of Michigan and am moving to Kentucky soon so I can be closer to family and enjoy season changes again. Kentucky weather is like Michigan's, but more summer and less winter. Here it just goes from hot to cool (no winter!) and no real Spring or Fall, and that was my favorite season. I remember well the falling leaves and cider times in Michigan's October and September. I moved to Kentucky in 2008 and settled into life in a green state with lots of water, including streams, lakes, and falling from the sky. A far cry from New Mexico. The thing I miss most from NM is the green chili and the open desert with no humidity. I never broke a sweat there in over 20 years, even eating cheese enchiladas covered with green chili. Kentucky is a basic meat, beans, chicken, and taters kinda' state so hello cornbread, goodbye chili.
