Raul's Story

Life After graduation, I returned to my hometown of Kingsville, Texas, where I attended Texas A&M University for one year. I volunteered for the Draft, and was sent to the US Army. I spent 30+ years before retiring. During these 30+ years, I had many interesting assignments to include serving in Vietnam (got wounded-stupid me), and in El Salvador during their Civil War (1980's). The best part of these 30+ years, is that I had a chance to continue my education at the expense of "Uncle Sam", earning four(4)separate degrees (AA in Psychology, BA in Psychology, BA in Drug & Alcohol Counselling/Administration, and a Masters in Counselling). The degrees assisted me in getting employed, shortly after retirement from the Armed Forces (10 days, after). I worked for the local Health Department, here in El Paso, Texas as an HIV/AIDS and STD Surveillance Specialist. The job was interesting and fun; I was pretty much my own boss. I retired after 12 1/2 years, and am presently fully retired from all forms of meaningful employment. I am now working E-Bay, to help occupy my time.Did okay, for a home boy from South Texas. College I attended classes at Webster University, Fort Bliss, Texas Branch, while still in the Military. I was taking classes four nights a week, from 6-9PM. It was hard having a Military Career and going to school at night, but in the end, it was all worth it. Although I did not experience the "college life" of being on a college campus, I did not miss much, as I feel that all that detracts from the real purpose of going to a College/University: To study and earn a degree in your chosen career field. Military I served three years in the US Navy Reserve, while still in High School. When it came time to serve my two years Active Duty, I chose to volunteer for the Draft, and go into the US Army. I wanted the excitement of serving in different countries and meeting different people from other cultures...I got to do that in my 30+ years of Service. I fought in many wars, met many people, and made many friends and enemies. I'd do it all over again, if given the opportunity. ADDENDUM: Retired from the El Paso, Texas Health Department on 1 March 2009. ...Expand for more
After that, I spent most of my days going back to the Health Department and doing Volunteer work at my old job: In the process of training my replacement. I did this a couple of hours a day, an then spent the rest of the day visiting with friends and working at my hobby: Buying articles at Flea Markets and Garage sales, and then listing those articles on E-Bay. I tried to stay busy, after having used to working, all those years. Currently, as of 10/18/2014, I am enjoying my Retirement and spend quality time with my Grand Daughters, who are the "Apples of my Eyes". However, I am still doing Ebay, to have something to do, and to help myself keep busy. ADDENDUM to LIFE: For the last few years, I have been making trips back to Kingsville, Texas on or about my birthday, which is 09/11/1944. My Dear Mother passed away on my birthday a few years back, and thus my yearly trips to Kingsville. I usually spend the day of September the 11th, at the local cemetery visiting Mom, my Step Dad Carl Ruth, and my Little Brother Danny Tellez (KIA in Vietnam in 1968). Afterwards, I visit with old friends (Efrain Chapa), and ex-neighbors (Garcia's that live on the 1200 block of King Street), and my Cousin (Frank Guerra and Family). I don't stay long in Kingsville, as all the rest of my Family that was left there, moved to Corpus Christi (The Tellez's: Jesse, Victor, Veronica, Donald, and Edgar). I have a brother that lives in North Texas (Oscar Tellez) who I communicate with, but do not see, often. Finally, Not to leave out my Dearest Sister Thelma Tellez Reyna, who lives in Pasadena, California, who I visit with at least twice a year (Once on Vacation with my own Family & Grand Daughters, and once by myself, for Rest and Recuperation). Addendum as of 02/05/2021: My Dear Brother Jesse Tellez, who also served in Vietnam, and my Dear little Sister Veronica Arnold Tellez, have passed away. Our family plot in the Kingsville Cemetary seems to be getting crowded by the passage of time. Sooner or later, it will be my turn, too! As for now, still living, by the Grace of God, is myself, my sister Thelma Reyna Tellez, Oscar Tellez, Victor Tellez, Donald Tellez, and Edgar Tellez.
