Ray's Story

Life I currently live in the Sierra Foothills. I've been here over 44 years now. Right after graduation from high school I started a public service career that lasted more than 55 years and recently came to a halt. That was a mixed blessing, but I was getting tired of rolling out at 5:30 in the morning every day. After all those years however, I do miss going to the office every day. I retired from a law enforcement career of 33+ years more than two decades ago. Although I no longer worked the street, I still had my foot in the door, and did other things at the department in a civilian capacity. I turned those duties over to someone much younger who had a little more energy than I did. But I still drop by once in a while to see how things are going. Married-Div- very happily Married. I have two sons and three daughters, 5 grandsons and 5 granddaughters the last of which was born in 2019. We like to razz my eldest son, he'll be collecting Social Security when his son graduates from high school. Employment Prior to graduation I had landed a job as a firefighter for the state department of forestry. I had an active summer and fought several large fires in Sonoma, Napa and Lake counties. I knew the draft would be breathing down my back soon, so I pre-enlisted during the summer and wound up with a three year stint in the Army with Military Intelligence. I am a Viet Nam Vet, having served there from Oct 66 to Oct 67. It was interesting to say the least. I did my last year at Presidio of SF. After getting out of the Army I got hired by Marin Sheriff's Dept. I spent two years there and then went to work for San Francisco Police Dept. I worked there for ten years but got tired of the commute and the way things were going in San Francisco. I started looking elsewhere for a job in Law Enforcement and that's how I wound up in Placerville. I worked as a police officer there for 22 years, retiring as a sergeant, a position I held for 17 of those years. I enjoyed retirement, but I couldn't sit still at home so I kept a part time job handy. I worked part time in a hardware store and then also went back to work at the police department in a civilian capacity, so I kept busy. I have hobbies as well and they don't normally figure into the retirement check, hence one of the reasons I worked part time. It was fun and gave me the chance to continue helping people. School San Rafael was a unique experience for me, having come from what would have been then considered the country in those days (Sonoma). It took a while to figure out the social order of things and how they fall into place. I was befriended by some great people, some of whom I maintain contact with today. Of course not my best memory, but I vividly recall the day JFK was assassinated. Best memories I think are the last days of school my junior and senior years. My favorite teachers had to be Al Barahal and Barbara Rinaldi without question. My English teachers would probably stroke out at the thought of what I pursue these days. I am currently writing short stories in creative non-fiction and have been published locally. As well, I participated in the publication of a literary journal for the local college as the editor. A far cry from the near failing marks I got in high school in anything having to do with readin or writin. I occasionally take a college class in something interesting and hav...Expand for more
e a bunch of credits, but never tried to obtain any degrees. On my career path they wouldn't have benefitted me at all. I'm also very interested in California history, (Mr Barahal would be proud!!) particularly pertaining to the development of law enforcement in the Motherlode area during the Gold Rush, and have written several articles about local history as well. One of the things I did around the police department was act as the department historian. I've been around there longer than anyone else and have gathered photos and materials that are posted on the walls of the department. Ours is one of the oldest police departments in the state. Family I don't know that I would have done anything differently, the chips had to fall where they did to get me where I am today. It would have been nice to miss some of the bumps in the road but they all contribute to building character and fodder for my stories. Some say I'm quite a character and full of fodder!!! As they say, what doesn't kill you makes you a better person. I am proud to say that all my kids are productive members of their communities. My oldest son is a welding instructor at an Industrial Arts school in Vermont. He also served in the Navy toward the end of Desert Storm. My younger son is in law enforcement and has been for over 26 years now. Oldest daughter works in the medical field and is certified in many areas of radiology. Middle daughter served in the Air Force as a jet engine mechanic. She worked on F-15s and B-52s.. She and her family settled in Paradise, but lost her home in the Camp Fire a few years ago. She has resettled in the area again and works for the county there. My youngest daughter left the Air Force to spend more quality time raising her family. She served for 12 years with two tours in the middle east. She was a paralegal in the JAG corps. She has now transferred those skills to the civilian field and works out of her home in Central California. To say that I am very proud of their accomplishments would be an understatement!! My wife is retired from a nearby city. She couldn't stand being home all the time either, she went back to work part time as well. She has since retired once again and amuses herself with stuff at home. Speaking of hobbies............. You may have noticed that one of my pictures doesn't seem exactly current. In fact it is. My hobby of choice until recently was called "Cowboy Action Shooting". It is a shooting sport utilizing 19th century firearms, shooting a timed course at steel targets. As well, the dress code is also 19th century. I liked to consider it as part of my second childhood at playing "Cowboys". It led me toward other associated hobbies as well. As with most hobbies, it wasn't cheap, so again, the part time jobs. But it was probably the most fun you can have with clothes on!!! (Unfortunately the Covid panic shut off our access to the local range and once that kinda went away, we couldn't get the club up and running again so that's been put on the back burner until something happens to fire up the club again.) Every participant had to have an alias........Mine was "Badwater Boz". Badwater actually is a place down on the edge of Death Valley. For obvious reasons, nobody lives there!!! Other than that................. Life is good!!! I hope the same is true for all who took the time to read this. Be Well friends, Ray
