Ray's Story
Life
I graduated Upland High in 1964 & attended Chaffey College for a time. I was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966. I became a member of the 1st Cavalry Division & went to Vietnam. Hollywood made a movie of my unit("We Were Soldiers"). I came home from the war feeling empty & hurting for those who never came back. I began soul searching & in 1973, I had a genuine encounter with God that changed my life. I found Jesus Christ as my Savior! He healed my heart & gave me the peace I was looking for. I began reading the Bible & became involved with Christian ministry. God led me to become a pastor & in 1978, I went full time into the ministry. I have done missionary work by going to other countries( I have gone to India 4 times & into Mexico many times ). My main involvement is being the senior pastor of the The Rock Christian Church in Fontana, California. I find serving God with my wife of 36 years the greatest fulfillment of my entire life.

I served for 2 years in the U.S. Army from March of 1966 to March of 1968. In 1966 I became a member of the 1st Cavalry Division & was sent to serve in the Vietnam War. I was there from October 66 to October of 67. Hollywood has made movie of my unit: "We Were Soldiers" I was stationed mainly in the central highlands of Vietnam. ions that usually put us on a mountaintop somewhere in the central highlands. It was usually a 3-man team & it was an exciting & dangerous work. I love my country & served it the best way I could. I respected the Vietnamese people & tried to treat them humanely. My experiences in the war left me somewhat empty & hurting for my fellow American soldiers that would never return. I began soul-searching & in 1973, I had a genuine encounter with God that changed my life. I found Jesus Christ as my Savior! He healed my heart & gave me the peace I was looking. God led me into the ministry & I have been a full time pastor for 27 years...My wife of 36 years has been my partner all these years & we truly enjoy serving the Lord. It is the joy of our lives!
I still visit the old High School once in a while. It has changed quite a bit but the memories are still there. I have visited the flagpole several times to read the names of the Classmates that died in the Vietnam War. My heart feels sorrow for them because they never had the chance to live as some of us have. I was sad to find out that after many years of inquiring the whereabouts of classmate Bill Francis, I found out that he also died during the war. He was in the U.S. Navy and was on a ship going toward the directionof the war. There was a storm on the ocean & somehow he was swept overboard. His body was never recovered. We salute you Bill...you were our friend.
