Ray's Story
January 28, 2021
After PHS, I spent one year at SUNY-Stony Brook, after which I was invited to take a break from college life. Seems that, at that time, computers weren't advanced enough to calculate a GPA that threatened to go into negative values. But, I sure enjoyed a year of the three P's..... Party, Poker and Puerile distractions.
Shortly thereafter, Uncle Sam invited me to join HIS fraternity of manly activities and rather than leave it all up to him, I enlisted for an additional year so that I could lock in my field of training (electronics). After training, I put in 2 1/2 years working as an advisor on a small Italian Air Force base...sort of a working vacation. It was that experience that turned me into a life long Italophile. I love the people, I love the country, I love the history....and have returned a number of times over the years to revisit the old stomping grounds and reconnect with old friends.
After the service, I returned to SUNY Stony Brook a bit more prepared to actually attend classes and wound up meeting my future wife, Stephanie, getting married (on Flag Day 1970), finishing first in my program and receiving a BS (needed plenty of it to get the degree but it was never Piled High and Deep enough to go all the way) degree in Linguistics.
Then, on to University of Pennsylvania for a Masters program in Linguistics. After another year and a half, I finally came to my senses and realized I was not cut out to spend the rest of my life within the confines of ivy covered walls and decided to actually earn some money.
The next 30 odd years (and I DO mean that in all of its interpretations) were spent in various business endeavors, large and small, raising a family and enjoying life.
I retired in 2005 and, now that money ...Expand for more
is no object (no object that I have, anyway) am enjoing the slower pace, my family, our 13 & 10 year old granddaughters and 6 year old grandson. In 2010, we founded Anabelle's Wish, a charity raising funds for families with children suffering from rare neurological disorders. Check us out on our Facebook page (Anabelle's Wish).
This year on Flag Day we will mark 51 years of wedded bliss (OK dear, you can stop reading over my shoulder, now). Our daughter, Kate, a fine arts and antiques appraiser, is 43, living less that 2 miles away from us in Swarthmore, PA and our son, Ian, is 39, living in Acton (think Boston) MA and co-owner of Harper/Elm Construction.
In 2019 on April 24, Ian and his wife Mandy contributed another node to the family tree. Meridian (Volcano was considered but, thankfully, rejected and "she didn't look like Clementine", another consideration) is now ready to compete with her three cousins for grandparental affection. Good thing love is not a zero sum commodity.
Ian and Mandy are at it again. July 22, 2021 Revel Sage joins the clan. Having achieved the "rich man's family" (one boy, one girl), the next expansion will have to wait for greats.
Whoa....what was that!? Wow...I guess it must have been 50 some years going by in a flash.
Update on Anabelle's Wish: The pandemic hit us hard. We lost all but two board members and had trouble recruiting new ones. Having been unable to do any fundraising for over a year, we have, made the decision to disband the organization after eleven years of service to special needs families. We thank all who have contributed and followed us for your support. You have made possible the help we have given to almost 30 families. Anabelle's Wish will cease to exist as of August 16, 2021.
