Ray's Story

I just attended the "when Im 64" class reunion and had a great time seeing people who were part of me back in the day and are still part of some of my best memories. This is what i have been up to for the last 46 years: My plan out of high school was to be an ironworker. I had a good starting job, got certified as a welder and then the economy tanked and I was laid off. Losing my job was serendipitous because my life took a 180. I took some classes at Chabot, fell in love with Biology(Thanks to Mr. Tanner) and eventually graduated from Humboldt with a degree in Biology and a teaching credential. In between Chabot and Humboldt, I worked a summer in Yellowstone National Park (with Rick Walters) and met the love of my life, Janie Vranicar. After college, Janie and I were married and we just celebrated our 39th anniversary. We moved to Benicia, Ca. and started our careers in public education. I taught in the science department at Benicia High School for 36 years before retiring at age 61. I taught Biology (Mr. Vanous is rolling over in his g...Expand for more
rave), physiology and biotechnology. Janie worked in the Vallejo School system for 37 years before retiring and still teaches a child psychology class at Diablo Valley College. We have two amazing daughters, Sarah and Megan, who have brought us more happiness, pride and joy than two parents are entitled. Thanks to Janie, our daughters are smarter, funnier, more organized and better looking than I could have ever hoped to be. So, what are my biggest claims to fame in life? 1) I married "way up" in both class and beauty. 2) Sarah and Megan 3) Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail with Jim Mahaney in 1975. 4) Backpacking the Sierras, kayaking the Yukon River in British Columbia and spending time experiencing the Northern Lights in Alaska with my younger brother, Mike. 5) Traveling the USA and parts of Europe with Janie 6) Fishing in Baja with Ken Mellberg, his sons and Eric Drew 7) Riding my motorcycle through Alaska, Canada and all States West of the Mississippi River. 8) Flyfishing on Putah Creek and the McCloud River. 9) Inventing Duct Tape.
