Ray's Story

OK, write a story, they ask. Sounds more like Mrs. Marlette asking for a term paper for senior year English. Or Ms. Moss in 10th grade English. How about Mr. Adler asking for poetry? Now Mr. Adler is a complete story in his own right. I had several meetings, lunches, and chance encounters with Mr.Adler, Phd. He left BHS after receiving his doctorate and taught at Oakland University. He also wrote children's books, I have several signed original copies. Great man, I miss him and his stories. There are numerous things I miss about the good old days, one is my hair. I traded stories with Larry Crotts about the hair he had at Anderson and Berkley and a lecture we received from the gym teachers. I miss the teachers who tried their best to drive home an important issue, a math equation, or a rule. I miss my 10th grade world history teacher Miss Redmond. She made us learn the difference between Shia and Suni Muslims. Quite appropriate for the world we live in today. Did she know how important it would be? I miss all of you, the students who were going through the years, my classmates. I have memories galore. It would take more space than allotted to put it into words. I would find it extremely difficult to single out one person or one event to talk about, there's just too many. I miss places like Hagelsteins Bakery, The Wayne Oak...Expand for more
land Bank, Browns Dairy, Dominicos Pizza, the A&W on 12 Mile, the Pasties from The Village Bakery, Berkley Theater, and Peppys Hamburger. All the happenings on Woodward before it was the dream cruise. How about WKNR, keener 13 with Dick Purtan. WXYZ, Lee Allen on the horn. CKLW, with Jo Jo Shutty from BHS. All the small transistor radios, who knew they would be collectable. I don't miss Mrs.Piatek in chemistry, I could not understand her accent, I did not understand much of what she said. Sorry to say that I don't miss my geometry teacher Miss Trainor. I don't miss the cigarette smoke from the teachers lounge. I don't miss my guidance counselor Mr.Tower, I don't recall receiving any guidance or sage advice. Perhaps it was me who wasn't hearing the pertinent point. Perhaps, most likely, I missed the point entirely. My personal details are very basic. Born 1948 and still breathing. Major events after 50 years aren't as major as once thought. Living and enjoying life, family and friends. Hiking and walking trails of Glacher Park and the other national parks. Research on famiy ancestry. Learning something new every day. Going to classes and lectures and enjoying them, who knew. I will not be attending the reunion, 50 years in the blink of an eye. Hard to believe. Enjoy the evening and thanks for the memories.
