Ray's Story
Life
After Mark Keppel, I went to East LA for a year majoring in Police Science. I Worked at LAPD as a student. As it turned out, my parents moved to an apartment building where most of the other tenants were in law enforcement. Man did I learn about partying.
I joined the Navy in 1972 (I was #2 in lottery) and did 2 tours of Vietnam. I was on the command ship for the evacuation of Saigon. I left the Navy in 1976 as a 2nd class gunner's mate.
I was married in 1976 after I left the Navy. She doesn't like to admit it but she picked me up at the USO. We celebrated our 32nd anniversary this year (2008). After almost 20 years of marriage we decided to have children. We have since adopted two boys (now 13 and 15) and a girl, 20.
After the Navy, I went to San Diego State University (also the Aztecs) and graduated with a BS in Business in 1981. After working in the personnel and sales fields for a few years I decided to go back to school and enter the Information Systems field. Since then I have gotten both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Information Systems. I have been working in this field as programmer, analyst, and manager since 1984.
As far as hobbies and free time, before I got old and fat ;-) I played tournament level racquetball. I now have gotten the golf bug. My handicap moves between 7 and 11 so I'm pretty good but I started too late. I wish that I would have joined the golf team at Keppel when they were begging for players. My boys have started playing though. I also coached my son's Little League teams.
Update: Just completed my 2008 club championship. I shot 76 in the first round. Won my flight. "Yippee!"
School
School is so very important. I wish I would have realized...Expand for more
it during my first two years at Keppel. Going into my junior year, I had a GPA of about 1.2 and was not looking forward to school. During that year I was very fortunate to meet Mr. Forman who took it upon himself to change my life around. He convinced me that I was not a dummy and that I actually could do quite well if I tried. One of my biggest regrets is that I never went back and thanked him. I finished my junior year with a 3.0 (for that year) and my senior year with a 3.8. Thank you Mr. Forman.
As mentioned in my other bio, I have two bachelors and a masters degree. I have never stopped going to school as my profession, information systems, requires continual learning. When I worked for Computer Sciences Corporation they offered to pay for my PhD but at that time I pretty burned out. In retrospect I should have done it. Would have had to move to D.C. though.
Now I'm trying to impress the school thing on my sons. School was never really important to my parents and they never harped on grades. I need to learn the tricks my Asian friends use on their kids. It is much harder now than it was for us.
Workplace
Work is just work. I've done the software development thing, the big corporation thing, the small business thing, and the startup thing. I'm now doing the government thing building up a pension so that I can do the retirement thing.
I've eliminated most of the job related stress from my life after realizing I don't handle it too well. As a senior software developer I'm able to work on what I want to and set my own schedule. I enjoy the technical aspect of my job and realized that I really missed it when I was in management. I just need to learn new things so I won't get bored.
