Raymond's Story
After St. Maryâs, I attended the University of Toledo where I immediately became involved in the Student Government as the Governor of Entertainment. Perfect! For the next three years, I was responsible for the on-campus concerts and entertainment. What fun! Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, Linda Ronstadt, Tim Buckley, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The James Gang and a host of others. The concerts were great and the parties afterwards were legend.
When I returned to the East Coast, I did not venture into the music business as expected but jumped into the fashion industry as a buyer for a small boutiques called the Tenement owned by Bond clothing, which was eventually purchase by the Gap. From there, I went into garment manufacturing with a friend. We made high fashion jeans (Ã la Gloria VanderbiltâJordache), which kept me running back and forth between NYC, NJ, Europe and the Far East.
In 1980, I switched gears again and ventured into publishing as the business manager of a firm that published TheaterWeek, Opera Monthly, The New York Native & Christopher Street Magazine. The New York Native was the first publication (before the New York Times) to begin covering the AIDS epidemic. Boy, did that ever open my eyes to the power struggles, the dishonesty and complacency within the CDC, NIH and the West Wing⦠Iâm sure some day the real truth about this will come out afte...Expand for more
r some journalist, years from now, begins to dig though the web of lies weâve been fed and is able to publish it.
In 1997, I briefly reunited with my old garment-making partner as production manager. We manufactured promotional products for concert tours (Rolling Stones, etc.) T-shirts, jackets, hats and everything else you can imagine. We expanded into making products for the Harley Davidson Café, The Hard Rock, plus HBO & Showtime.
In 2000, I moved back into publishing as an account executive for Rivendell Media, which basically worked with all the major ad agencies to reach niche markets.
In 2005, I had had enough cold weather and moved to a house my partner and I bought in 1999 in Palm Springs. I managed a small hotel we owned for five years and then began yet another chapter by opening a âhealthy foodâ pet shop, which I still operated in Palm Desert, CA.
Weâve been lucky enough to travel extensively in Europe & Asia. I visit Florence, Italy oftenâwhere my Mom is fromâand visit all my cousins there and eat and drink like itâs an Italian wedding. I am currently working on my Italian citizenship, which would allow me to stay in the EU for more than six months without a Visa.
We currently have homes in Palm Springs, CA (perfect for the winter), Mountain Center, CA (always nice) and Provincetown, MA (perfect for the summer). We celebrated our 40th anniversary in February 2016.
