Raymond's Story

I have been very blessed. I've got to do about everything I've wanted to do. Starting with growing up in the Sheriff's office, to becoming a private investigator and a sports publisher. Along the way I served in the US Marine Corps as an Investigator with JAG, before the TV show made it cool to be one. (For the record none of the partners I had looked like Catherine Bell from the TV series.) Plus being a city councilman, association executive, an entertainer and missionary show up on my resume. Most recently I served as the Police Chief and Director of Public Safety in Johnston City. Currently I'm working on series of novels based on my cases as a St. Louis based private investigator, running my hobby ranch "Lone Star Acres" and do some investigative consultanting and security work. Always a cowboy, at least, I wore the white hat (the good guy), got to go to professional bull riding school at the age of 40, thank God it wasn't 4 years long. I was very popular among my classmates, I was voted Most Likely to Get Killed. (The bulls didn't seem to care about me much and my white hat kept getting dirty, I asked if I could ride bulls my own age) I served on the City Council with our high school principal, Mr.Bowers, which was kinda strange. I kept thinking I was going to have to stand in the corner if I disagreed with him. Plus, I think I still owe him two days of detention. Actually I was the Mayor for one weekend when Mayor Sydney Appleton was out of town. I stayed up all weekend, so not to miss a minute of my administration. For the record, the city never ran as smooth as it did that weekend. People are still talking about it, (if you include me in the people category). For 5 years, I was a professional headliner comedian (Leon the Bad Boy of Comedy.) My Outlaw Comedy Tour of 94, took me to Chicago, Denver, Nashville, Indianapolis, Springfield, Jefferson City, Detroit, St. Louis, Louisville, Memphis, and Krogers (you have to eat). I was funny, really, I mean really funny! I'm probably best known as the founder and past publisher of a St. Louis Cardinals website in association with Scout.com and Fox Sports. I retired from this venture after being invited to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, by former St. Louis Cardinals' manager Billy Southworth's family, to represent them at the induction ceremonies for Billy the Kid. SCHOOL MTHS, I really didn't spend much time there. I started working at the Sheriff's Office at the age of 13 by the time I was 15 with a learners permit, I was driving squad cars and spending ALL my time at the Sheriff's Dept. The Class of '73 was a great class and I had a great childhood, no doubt. Growing up, driving police cars, gun fights, making drug busts, catching bad guys, etc. but looking back, I wish I would have spent a little more time at school, being a regular teenager. No badges, no guns, no handcuffs. Ok, let me keep the handcuffs. No one, today, believes what I did at the Sheriff's office, anyway. I wouldn't believe it, if I hadn't lived it. So if I missed out getting to know you, send me an email and give me a second chance. COLLEGE It took 29 years to finish college, attending courses and programs all over the world, to finish with a Degree in Practical Ministry and Criminal Justice. Education should be a lifelong pursuit and I'm still working towards my doctorate. Maybe this time it won't take 29 years, I hope. (I can't imagine Spring Break in Florida when I'm in my 70s.) WORKPLACE In high school, I wrote down all the things that I wanted to do in life, it included, being a police officer, a minister, an entertainer, a US Marine, work for the FBI, be a Cowboy, drive an 18 wheeler, be a reporter and an oceanographer (probably spelle...Expand for more
d that wrong, which is why I didn't become one). I got to do everything, except the ocean thing. From 1968-74, worked for the Sheriff Dept, than went to Washington DC to work for the FBI for two years, returned home to join the Marines, after 5 years in the Corp, returned to Murphysboro to run for Sheriff. That didn't take, but was elected to City Council, eventually started my own Detective Agency in St. Louis, after 5 years as a professional stand-up comedian. (Leon the Bad Boy of Comedy, if you ever caught my show.) Somewhere in there I turned 40 and decided I was going to be the oldest Rookie of the Year Bullrider. So this is my Cowboy thing. So I went to professional bull riding school. (middle age crazy) They always told me you meet a lot of women riding bulls, what they didn't tell me is, that they would all be nurses. FYI, the Rookie of the Year thing, didn't work out. I felt like riding two year old bulls wasn't fair, they should have let me ride bulls my own age. I could stay on a 40-year-old bull, 8 seconds and beyond. Took two years and drove the 18 wheeler (not as romantic as I thought, dumbest thing I ever did) but did get to see a lot of the USA again and looked up friends and family along the way. Sitting here it seems romantic and cool. (NOT) Finally finished college, went to Honduras as a missionary and even worked on a Benny Hinn crusade. Now getting to do my reporting, covering the St. Louis Cardinals for a variety of publications to include your hometown newspapers now and then. Don't think I'll ever get to do the ocean thing, but I'm committed to learning how to spell it anyway. OCEANOGRAPHER. Gee, come to find out I spelled it right anyway. Currently I'm working on a novel. The process of writing a novel is a vast departure from my days as a sportswriter covering the St. Louis Cardinals and their minor league system. Hopefully the success and discipline of writing on a daily basis for 10 seasons will carry over into working on these new projects. Currently in the planning and research stages are four novels and a series, "Gateway to ---", that will feature the exploits of an international private investigator based out of St. Louis. Instead of a Glock, armed with minimum talent and a stack of how-to books, including; "Writing Fiction for Dummies" (I have a lot of these yellow "for Dummies" books on my book shelf), "your first Novel", "Writer's Ideas", and a subscription to "Writer's Digest", the next big adventure begins. MILITARY Served in the United States Marine Corps for 4+ years, was extended on active duty, while serving as an investigator for JAG. Highlights, As a platoon sergeant, my platoons received the following honors; Highest rated security unit in West-Pac Division Crew Serve Weapons Champions Division Drill Champions CG Inspection Champions, I was and always will be, proud of those men and women who served with me. Other military highlights included, Security Duty in Adak, Alaska, Artic Survival School, Mountain Climbing School. I got to go to SEARS school. (This is the survival course the Marines send their pilots to for training) This is the snake biting, leech sucking, bug eating school. I'm still brushing my teeth to get the taste of them bugs out. I was a guest instructor at the Naval Academy and a senior instructor at the Illinois National Guard Military Academies. By now, my breath had improved. Among the countries I visited or was on loan to, by the Marines, was England, Scotland, Norway, Spain, Portugal, the Azores Island, Alaska (where I was at, was like another country, Indians who did not speak english) and Central America and if I told you anything else, I'd have to kill you. Semper Fi! God Bless the USA
