Robert's Story

So here is my Creston story. I have to thank my 12 th grade English teacher, I think it was Ms. Dianne Merillat (I got the name out of an on line year book) to straighten me up or I would not have been one of the 450 graduates in the class of 1970. After missing 25 to 30 days in the first semester, Ms. Merillat asked me one day, in front of the class, what I was doing in school. Telling her I was going to graduate in June! She replied "No you are not". Needless to say, this scared the hell out of me. Since I wasn't a good student, I really buckled down and did my assignment as required. As a result, I only missed 5 days the rest of the year due to having Bronchitis. She also added comments/notes on my homework encouraging me which helped. This also spilled over to my other classes as well as I completed my assignments as required. In May. the girl I was dating asked my what my goals were in life after high school. Being directionless, she suggested I attend GRJC. They will take anybody, she said. I was proof, that at the time anyway, they will take anyone. I did two years at JC before moving on to Grand Valley State College. as it was called then. However, after a year left school to work in the restaurant business plus get married. My wife was in her last year of ...Expand for more
nursing school so i worked and she finished her lasses. Shortly after she graduated. I left the restaurant business and went to work in the gypsum manufacturing business at Gand Rapids Gypsum. I was surprised to find out they payed for college I you got a B or higher. So I enrolled at Aquinas and finally finished my degree soon after my first son was born. After trying to buy a restaurant and other small entities, that failed, I returned to the manufacturing sector at Georgia Pacific here in GR. In the 14 years at worked at the plant, I rose to the plant manager position. However, with newer and more cost effective plants going online I had to tell the employees we were closing. First the west plant then nine months later the east plant. After taking a job in the drywall supply sector for three years, so my youngest could graduate from high school, I went back to work for Georgia Pacific in Brunswick, GA. While I was there, I was recruited by Certainteed Gypsum and moved to Nashville, AR. After two plus years in Arkansas, we moved so I could helped start up a new plant in Moundsville, WV. i am now retired and, I'm sure my old teachers will get a kick out of this, I am a substitute teacher doing K through 12 th grade. It keep me young and helps my mind stay engaged.
