Rebecca's Story
Hung out with theater, music, and art kids in HS. Married my HS sweetheart (too young) and divorced 11 years later with the friendliest divorce ever (we're still close friends) and the loveliest kid (now grown-up and my best friend). Attended six colleges (including SCSC) on the way to an Associates, two Bachelor's, and (embarrassingly) obtained most of my Master's but never got around to finishing. In approximate chronological order, I have worked professionally as: a teacher; secretary; writer; counselor; voice-over artist (singer) for radio/TV; (approx.) ninth woman to be a Press Secretary in the U.S. Senate; directed public relations and marketing for many national health care and veteran organizations; was the COO for a multi-million $ land development/property mgmt. firm (when that was a lot of money), but I hated for-profit and quit to go back to making the world a better place in the non-profit world; and finally started my own firm that represented some pharmaceutical firms (I had to because I needed to pay my mortgage) and many of the largest NGOs in U.S. health care (I wanted to, and never charged a penny more than it took to keep me alive), including the nations of Great Britain and Canada, as well as a couple of U.S. states and Canadian Provinces. It has been fun, challenging, and frightening every step of the way. Almost 40 yrs ago I married my English Lit teacher husband, Bob, the best , most honest, and most loving man in the world. No one could ask for a better man to love. Now I have a couple of very rare diseases (among the 11 autoimmune diseases that have been plaguing me for many years); thank goodness for all my friends in health care who have quite literally saved my life -- especially the friends at Johns ...Expand for more
Hopkins Univ. Hospital and the National Institute for Health (NIH) Eye Institute, without whom I would surely have died any one of the three times I have been clinically dead and they have brought me back, and without whom I would be a great deal more than the 90% blind that I currently am. Throughout it all I have been a church choir director and taught free piano lessons to young children from economically disadvantaged families. High points of my life (beyond the obvious 2 marriages and birth of my daughter and adopted granddaughter): include going to the Arctic Circle and playing guitar there (not a tour, just Bob and I!; singing on stage at the Kennedy Ctr and Lincoln Ctr; studying classical singing/opera with each of my teachers/coaches, especially opera singers Leneida Crawford and Anne Bentz; getting a Lecture Award from Britain's Health System Trust and getting to teach there because of it; the thrill every single time I walk into the Capitol Building or Russell Senate Office Building when I worked there; and, still, every time I drive or walk into/by Arlington Cemetery, the Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, WWII, Viet Nam and Einstein Memorials, and all the Smithsonian Museums in what will always be my home city of D.C.; every rehearsal and performance, and legendary, marathon music jams I ever had with friends and fellow musicians for the past 30+ years in MD, VA, DC, WVa, PA, OH, USVI, and FL; getting a grand piano (I saved a long time) for my 60th birthday; and finally,, being married 35+ years to the finest and most supportive and loving husband and friend ever! Plus, I’ve been blessed with the best friends/family a woman could hope to have in D.C., Pueblo., and around the world. God has been very, very good to me.
