Rebecca's Story

Life My dad was assigned to Ft. Leonard Wood in the summer after my junior year, so it was with some reluctance that I left Rich East and Park Forest....the place of so many happy memories. But Ft. Leonard Wood was a surprise, with so many friendly people there and at the school I attended in Waynesville, Mo. I graduated from high school at Ft. Leonard Wood and then went to college at SW Missouri State for a few months until my dad got assigned to Izmir, Turkey. We lived there for almost 3 years. What a place! Everyone who has ever lived in Izmir is still crazy about it. After living in California for a couple of years I returned to Georgia in order to keep my mother company while my dad went to Viet Nam in 1971. After he returned I decided I was tired of moving, and so stayed in Athens, Georgia, where I still reside. I got a job at a hospital as a ward clerk on ICU, where I discovered I was interested in the goings on in the hospital. I married a advanced EMT who I met there and who, coincidentally, was my best friend. We were married in 1979 and are still going strong. We share the same interests and faith, which has served us well over the years. I became a basic EMT shortly after Brian and I married, which may surprise old friends, as I was a wuss when it came to blood. I worked as an ER tech for about 16 years and a ward secretary for severa...Expand for more
l years. I've been at Athens Regional for 29 years and in the E.R. for about 25. It feels like home. I guess I'm an E.R. junkie...I really like helping people in that way. We've never had children, to our immense regret, so I've gone to relief status in the E.R. so that we can do foster care. We should be starting soon. Brian went to engineering school after leaving EMS and now is an engineer with the EPA and does groundwater investigations at hazardous waste sites all over the Southeast. He's gone to Guatemala and Angola to put in wells for poor villages recently. As for pets, we've had a dog that looked like Old Yeller, an Alaskan Malamute, and are currently being bossed by a 13 year old crabby grey-striped tabby. Well, there's my life, in a nutshell. What's going on with you? Nov. 2009: We never did foster care. Shortly after I went to a relief position, both my parents became ill and my sister and I spent time taking turns caring for them over a period of two years, until they both went into nursing homes. Earlier this year I found out that I have Lyme disease, probably for at least 20 years, which makes treating it difficult. I have nerve damage in my legs, which means no more dancing.....drat! I love to dance. Hopefully, I will be able to fight this off and return to good health. I hope all is well with my old friends....I remember you well.
