Rebecca's Story
Life
I graduated from high school and in August of '65 my mom and dad drove me to Houston, Texas to begin my college career at the University of Houston. Homesickness and lack of study habits aided in my downfall at UH the first 2 semesters...so I worked at Exxon for a semester and reenrolled at UH. I graduated with a BS in education in 1970. I received my MS in reading in 1991. I taught 4th grade, 5th grade and the Title 1 program for Friendswood ISD for 20 years. I also developed courses for the University of Houston, Clear Lake, teaching preservice teachers how to detect reading difficulties in children and then remediate the difficulties. I taught these two courses at my school and my elementary students were able to benefit from a reading program in the summer. I decided to retire so the program is no longer available. But it was an experience of a life-time. I love teaching at the college level.
My three boys, Kerry (40), Marc (36), and Erik (32) are living their lives away from home. Kerry works for DuPont and is the father of my grandchild, Kiel (21). Kiel is now attending Notre Dame College ...Expand for more
in Cleveland, playing water polo, and swimming for the college. Marc is a manager for Liberty Mutual in Florida. He recently married his sweetheart Oct. 21st in St. Augustine, Florida. Wyatt Samuel Haner was born Nov. 12th and, of course, he's beautiful. Cole William Haner was born on my birthday, February 17th, 2014. He is adorable and such a sweet little guy. Erik is now working and managing in Corpus Christi, Texas. He and Audrey have two children(my grandchildren) Michie, 6, and Ethan, 3.
College
During my first year at U of Houston, I lived in a five girl suite. One of my roommates was from Laredo, Texas. We usually dined with a group of guys from the men's dorm. One Spring Break we all decided to visit Emma's home in Laredo so all of us piled in several cars (without air-conditioning) and descended upon her family. Since Larado is a border town, we all decided to visit Mexico across the border, called Nuevo Laredo! Since there was no drinking age in Mexico, we hit the Cadillac Bar! We drank Singapore Slings and Gin Fizzes! Needless to say, I don't remember the drive back. We had a blast!
