Rebecca's Story

I did not get to graduate from Ayer High because my dad retired that summer and we moved to E. Pepperell. I graduated from North Middlesex Regional instead after a very lonely and miserable year. I guess I wasn't ready to leave the army life because I married into it, twice. My husband left the army after the war was over and worked for Foster Grants in Leominister for a few years. My 2nd husband and I moved to Texas with our three children in 1978 to get my knees away from the winter weather. I stayed there until 2006. He died suddenly in 2004 after almost 30 years of marriage. For 8 years I worked in Income Assistance for the state of Texas. I stopped working to raise my twin grandchildren. I was a volunteer at the school all through their elementary years. I have no idea where in Texas my oldest son lives. He has 6 children and a step-child. My daughter is presently battling breast cancer while a guest of the Texas Penal System. She is currently undergoing radiation therapy after a double mastectomy and will follow with reconstruction. I thank those of you who are tax payers in Texas for keeping her alive for me. She has 2 children who live in Oklahoma. My last child, a son, lives here in the same town I do with his wife and 3 daughters. His brother's oldest son lives with him and that boy's twin sister lives with me. I presently live in North Carolina. I live near my father and my youngest son and his family. I am trying to get back into welfare work but goi...Expand for more
ng back to work in my 50s after 13 years out is not easy. K-Mart it is for now. I found a tortoiseshell kitten in a parking lot about a year ago and a cock-a-poo running loose on a busy street near Valentine's day this year. This seems to be my main way of getting pets throughout my life. My 15 year old granddaughter lives with me and that is a constant joy and challenge. Her boyfriend just gave her a pet albino rat. I have a domestic partner who is originally from Ohio and spent 30 years as a chef and is now a butcher for a major grocery chain around here. I eat very well, maybe too well! I find 'boyfriend' to be a weird word to use at this stage in life. I think the IRS designation is pretty cool though - POSSLQ! Somehow, I figure most people from my past communities, as they are called on this site, barely remember me at all. I never made childhood friends because I was too ashamed of my family life. I wish all teens could be told before their high school years that dysfunctional families outnumber 'normal' ones. It would save a lot of heartache. Maybe if there had been an Al-ateen group on base, it would have made a difference. I never noticed the lack of adult friends as long as my husband was my best friend and companion but it sure feels strange to me now. I wish I knew how to fix it. I finally married my 'partner' in 2016. We own a home in the mountains of N. Carolina. I retired shortly after turning 60. My last name is now Keyse. I am on FB at least 2x a week.
