Rebecca's Story

Life After 1 year of college, I joined the Air Force. I have lived in Japan, Idaho, Florida, Indiana, Washington, back to Florida, Hawaii, England, San Antonio Texas, and now we are living in Manassas Virginia. I get back to Marion at least once a year. I was stationed at Grissom for a while then the base became a reserve base. I have managed to complete 2 associates degrees in completely unrelated fields! I am currently married to an officer in the Air Force and we have had assignments in some really interesting places. It is wonderful. Well, it was wonderful right up until the landmine detonated and my husband and 2 of his troops were injured. That is why we were in Texas. Medically it was the place to be for my husband to recover. My husband received his Purple Heart on August 12 of 2005. I have a 18 year old son. Many people who have met him, and those who knew my brother, have immediately known who he belonged to. He is the image of my brother Rick. Life with an ADHD child is interesting, challenging, and never dull. He wants to live somewhere where there are 4 seasons and at least one snowfall a year! I told him when he moved out, he could. During our time in England we saw lots of interesting places. We visited one of the area castles. Reality hits you in the dungeon when you realize that they really did torture people right where you are standing. Italy is where we spent Thanksgiving. My mom came to visit and we took her to as many places as we could. Matthew has recovered and has been returned to full duty. We bought a townhouse in Manassas Virginia. Cameron starts college in August. This is going to be an extremely busy summer. Military During my military career I was stationed at Kadena AB in Okinawa, Japan from November of 1981 to April of 1983. While I lived on Okinawa I was in 2 bands. One was called TNT and the other one was Vendetta. From Okinawa, I went to Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, of all places. I was there from April 1983 to February 1985. After I got there I quickly learned how to ski well enough not to fall every time I went. I also learned that there isn't much to do but hunt, fish, and bowl. I got really good at bowling. I went hunting and fishing a few times but...it just wasn't me. I left Moun...Expand for more
tain Home in 1985 and went to Eglin AFB in Florida. Sand, Surf, fun. I really enjoyed Ft. Walton Beach. I was there for Hurricane Elana in 1983! I had relatives in Florida and I drove to Tampa to see them a few times. While I was in Florida, I got married and had a child and got divorced. After I had my son, in March of 1989, I had to have surgery. My folks came and got my son and took him to Indiana. I was leaving Florida to live at Grissom AFB in October, so I just joined them after I recuperated. I lived at Grissom AFB from 1989 until it converted to a reserve base in 1994! I really liked being that close to my folks. It helped a lot with my son. It was also good because I was able to be there for my mom when my dad passed away in 1992. I met my current husband while working at the dental clinic at Grissom. We started dating shortly before the base closed. He is from Alaska so we drove across the US to Washington State because I was going there next. I found an apartment, and arranged for storage for my car. Then we drove his truck up the highway from Washington to Alaska! Quite a trip. Never again. I flew back to Indiana, he went to Japan. In July of 1994 my son and I moved to Spokane, Washington. The base there is Fairchild. Spokane is a beautiful city. I liked living there except that the winters are harsh. Shoveling snow isn't my idea of a good way to start a day. My husband, Matthew, and I finally got married in Spokane in January of 1996. I left the military in February of 1997. He is still in the Air Force. We have lived in Navarre, Florida while he was stationed at Hurlburt AFB. From there we lived for 3 years at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. In June of 2004 we moved to England to a small base there called RAF Croughton. We traveled quite a bit while there. We spent Thanksgiving of 2004 in Rome. We also got to France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. Wonderful time. In June of 2005 my husband was injured in a land mine detonation while deployed to Afghanistan. He was medically PCS'd to Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas. We were there for 2 years and now are in Manassas Virginia. He is stationed at the Pentagon. In 2 years he retires from the Air Force and we are looking forward to what the future has in store for us.
