Regina's Story

I did not marry my high school sweetheart like so many people thought. I met someone who is truly my soul mate. We were just meant to be together. His name is John and we celebrated our 34th anniversary last August. We had 2 children, a boy Shawn in 1978 and a girl Sheyann in 1982. We moved into the "Old Grainery" in Breesport and have been here for about 25 years. We have 2 acres of land which is good considering my love of animals. I have worked with veterinarians for over 15 years and love it. We only have 3 cats and 2 dogs at the moment (we lost 2 Great Danes last year due to old age) Things have not always been easy. I was diagnosed in 2005 with breast cancer and had to undergo surgery and radiation. (no chemo thank God) We lost our son in 2006 to suicide. He was bi-polar and doing very well on his medication but while at a 4th of July B.B.Q. someone slipped somthing into his drink that caused him to have a psycotic episode to the point we had to admit him to a Behavioral Science Unit. Our son was 27 and doctors would not communicate with us even though Shawn had signed the HEPA papers saying they could. He commited suicide 5 days after being released from St. Joseph's mental health facility. We have become very involved in suicide awareness and prevention. We are also in the process of trying to get a bill introduced that would require doctors to speak with next of kin regardless of patients age. It is our hope that through this bill we can help prevent another family from having to go through the same thing. Our daughter Shey had a little boy (Kasey) so we have one grandchild who is almost 5 and quite the little pisser. We love him dearly but he is a handful. But in March of 2008 Shey was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and had to have surgery and chemo. They had to put a "port" in her chest/neck area to administ...Expand for more
er the chemo. I took her to her treatments and she was an inspiration to many of the other patients. She maintained her sense of humor she called her port "her little alien", wore funny colorful socks with sandals, weird looking hats and t-shirts with funny pictures to her treatments. Everyone loved having her come in and couldn't wait to see what she was going to wear at the next session! I am so proud of her. She is one strong young lady. Even though she lost weight, was fatigued and vomited often she always acted like it was no big deal, never missed a day of work and when she lost her hair she told everyone that she loved not having to wash it and mess with it everyday. We go next month to see if she is still in remission and if so the doctors are going to remove her little alien. She is up to 127 lbs now and her doctor says she is doing well and is very hopeful that she is cured. My husband John goes to Rochester Brain and Spinal clinic April 27th to have 3 discs replaced and rods put in. He has been out of work for 18 months now and we are hoping that with this surgery he will eventually be able to work again. I am currently unemployed also due to the doctor I was working for left the practice. I am currently looking for any type of work with animals or children. I ran a daycare for 10 years while my children were young and would love to find something in the school district. So that about covers what has happened since I graduated. Isn't it funny how when you are in school you imagine what your future will be like and when you get out of school the world seems so different. Many of my hopes and dreams have come to be while some of the hardships have taken it's toll I still remain grateful for everyday of my life. I hope you all have had your dreams and ambitions come to light and wish you all good luck in the future.
