Regina's Story

Wow where does one begin to capture all the highlights of their life?! Right after graduation in 1970 I went to Gateway for nursing and then worked as an L.P.N. at Kenosha Memorial Hospital in the Emergency Dept. I married in 1972 and have 3 sons. I went back to school in 1980 for nursing and became an RN. I worked as the school nurse at Gateway in Racine for 5 years. During this time I also volunteered as an EMT with Pleasant Prairie Fire Dept. In 1989 I moved with my now ex-husband to Mississippi with our 3 sons and worked for Kimberly Clark as an Occupational Health Nurse. While in Mississippi I continued to go back to school and in 1992 obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the Mississippi University for Women, in 1996 I completed my Master’s Degree in Nursing Education with a minor in Occupational Health. While in Mississippi in collaboration with Magnolia Hospital I developed a hospital based occupational health department. I also worked with the county and established a free health clinic for the working poor. In 1999 I moved to Overland Park, Kansas to manage an employee health department for Hoechst Marion Roussel. At the same time my husband and I separated. I worked with HMR until they were bought out and the company relocated to New Jersey. Timing was perfect because at the same time I was recruited by Kraft Foods. I relocated to Chicago and became manager of their North American Employee Health Program. This was by far my most challenging and exciting position. I traveled extensively all over the US, Canada, and even to Mexico. At the same time I was living at Plaza One, on the 49th floor 2 bocks off Michigan Avenue in Chicago. I loved how the city seemed to always be alive with things to see and do! I still miss my Saturday visit to Garretts Popcorn! There is nothing like their cheese caramel popcorn! Then in 2002 my husband and I finally divorced, but remain best friends. After 30 years and 3 children how do you not? I then became a bit of a workaholic and career orientated. In 2003 I completed my P...Expand for more
hD in Public Health. It was in 2003 that I met my current husband through our mutual admiration of Renaissance Festivals. It is fun to dress in theme costume and lose one’s self in a bygone era. My current husband is Canadian and he gave living in Chicago a shot, but he is the epitome of you can take the boy off the farm but not the farm from the boy. So after much soul searching on immigrating to another country (which Canada isn’t really that much different) I made the plunge. We purchased his childhood farm when his dad passed away, and in combination with his own farm, I found myself immersed in a 750 acre farm with my closest neighbor a mile away! We are an organic farm and produce grain such as wheat, barley, oats, flax, and canola. I have learned to ride a 4 wheeler and a snowmobile. But the highlight is how the nature can take my breath away! I never tire to see the elk, moose, deer, coyote, and occasional bear, meander through the backyard. For those with inquiring minds I will admit to attempting to drive the tractors but found it is not my cup of tea! Two of my sons have also immigrated here and married Canadian girls and we are now dual citizens. My mom and stepdad even immigrated here, but sadly they have since passed away. But even though my oldest son and daughter in law, along with their adult children, come to visit often they have adamantly said it is far too cold for them to ever consider relocating here. I must say the 40-50 below zero in the winter is a bit chilly! But that makes a nice cozy fire in the fireplace and a cup of hot tea all the more savory! My husband and I love to travel and have been blessed to have visited 35 countries and have several more on the bucket list. But by far my greatest passion is currently working in medical missions to Honduras. It is one of the most rewarding things I have done. I try to do 3 trips a year. My husband and I love having our family and friends come and stay at the farm. So any of you that remember me and would like to come up to reminisce just get in touch with me!
