Rene's Story
Life
Well, it hasn't been boring. I'm been lucky to share my life with my husband, Steven, my love, my best friend and partner in crime. He shares my love of learning, family and a good sense of humor. We've been married 16 years, together 19 years and we have a lease for 90 with a renewal clause. ;)
Together we have David, our only surviving child (we lost two girls, Sarah and Ruth due to miscarriage.) and he is a character - 10 going on 45. He's funny, joyous and a born activist. David is not only gifted intellectually, he's a gifted soul with his own sense of his place in the world. As my mother puts it, he's what happens when two bookworms mate. LOL
I've learned that we are given tragedies to use as ladders. We are meant to search within ourselves during crisis and discover how we can make this world better. For me at least, I have found that by doing this I give my grief, and ultimately my life, meaning.
An added bonus to this, as if one was needed, is that I have been blessed to meet some amazing people and participate in some wonderful organizations.
Through the years I have had the challenge of being a nongovernmental representative to the UN in a conference on gun violence and the priviledge of learning self reliance after becoming disabled due to a horseback riding accident. (After several years of hard work I triumphed by being able to walk again unaided...most of the time.) I now employed with the Northern Kentucky Cooperative for Educational Services doing vocational testing on children with disabilities discover their job potentials. It's social services and education, so it's great for me.
When I'm not working or with the boys I do family research. I particularly enjoy my Melungeon, Scottish and Palatine roots though one of my favorite an...Expand for more
cestors was a Welsh pirate who was cheated out of his land in New Amsterdam by a transvestite politician. With him in the family, who worries about horse thieves!
I have been lucky to share my life with beloved friends that I have had for, in some cases, 30 years. I may not be the prettiest and I'm sure not the richest, but I wouldn't trade what I've learned in this life for anything.
Workplace
After graduate school, I started working in the area of chemical dependency. I met amazing people who worked to change their own lives and those of others.
I also worked with as state case worker in OH working with mothers on ADC. After that I branched out a bit when I became a private investigator for an insurance adjustor. (I had gotten my paralegal certificate in my spare time because of my love of research.)
In recent years I was blessed to work first as a volunteer, then professionally with the Million Mom March, an organization founded to deal with the need for sensible gun laws. I was their KY state rep., a speech writer, then their coordinator for the South. I also had the honor of being a nongovernmental representative to the UN.
My work with the KY Department of Vocational Rehabilitation helping other disabled individuals to become independent through employment was especially fulfilling. (I, myself, became disabled after an accident in 2000.) Not only did it give me an appreciation of the strength and determination that many in the disabled community have, but it brought me to where I am now.
Today I work with disabled students, preparing them for future employment with vocational assessments. By showing them where their skills lie, they can better prepare for the world outside school. I love working with the kids one on one, they are the greatest.
