Renee's Story

Well now that you're in your early forties, don't you feel a little smarter, secure and overall in control? Maybe you feel like you know where your going or think you've already arrived. On most days I feel like that. However, I think time will still be the greatest educator and another twenty years from now I might look back to today, 8/16/08 and say "wow, that was a pretty dumb story I wrote on classmates.com." Alright, enough of the philosophical writing. The truth is - I have a great life. I lived in Florida and Georgia for many years after high school. It was a rough road. Trying to tame my ego while remaining independent. I lost touch with just about everyone except Tina (Laterza) Edging. Tina was my only source of information regarding friends from high school. Tina is the one that usually keeps me informed about class reunions. This time I haven't heard from her, but there's still time. I moved back to Illinois in my late twenties. It was just time to come home. I played hard, met a bunch of people. I slowly learned what I liked and didn't like about life. Today my inner circle is small, while my acquaintance circle is very large. I am very devoted to my inner circle. Sometimes so much that there's no room for anyone or anything else. Please don't interpret my words as being cocky. I just think it's important to put forth my energy into the people I really love and have connected with. I am very fortunate to have the friends and family I have. In 1996, I married, Jeff Olson from Oak Lawn. We had our first child, Brian, in 1998. The same year Jeff established his own business. I guess you could say that I retired in 1998 from the mortgage business. In 2000, we had our second child, Nicholas. My step son Michael who is 18, lived in Arizona at the time. In 2000, we joined the many moving to Plainfield. Yes, do the math. My boys are only 8 and almost 10. While your kids are probably all grown up I'm still in the trenches of child rearing. Since I left the mortgage business, I've been involved with some start-ups. I have played around a little bit with web design and now I want to start an e-commerce site. I work for Jeff throughout the year, but my responsibilities are very basic (and he doesn't need me often). Jeff goes through his busy season starting the first monday after the fourth. Which has actually worked out well for me because I used to take my kids on extended vacations. My Mom traveled with me too. What more could I ask for? Our vacations were not really planned. We would make plans to do one or two specific things, like tubing the Chatahotchee river or a special event in Hermosa, Fl. and then we would wing it from there. We stopped when we wanted, slept and ate when we needed. We traveled hoping to stumble into something exciting. As fun as that was, poor Jeff didn't see us for many weeks. eeks. Now of course, I'm sure you can imagine the bill I ran up. Those days of mindless travel have been replaced by home on lake Shafer. This way Jeff can spent time with us as often as his schedule will allow. Way cool for us! We have been remodeling the house which is just a pain in the you know what. But it's worth it. My kids spend most of their time on the water. They just started water skiing. We like to go to the little islands and catch frogs and turtles or we lay on the waters edge scooping up fish. I finally went to Indiana Beach this week. We're always so busy doing other things here that we had to take special time out to go the beach. I haven't been there since 1996. I'm not going into the details of parenting because my story would probably run parallel to yours. Other than my step son coming to live with us when he was 16. Michael went to Plainfield Central High School and is now living on his own. I really don't have enough space left to tell you about my adventures with Michael, but I will say we had it all, joy, anger, tears and love. My Mom and Dad are both still alive and they both remarried. Thank God they didn't stay together to raise the children. My siblings and I would all be basket cases. My sister, Debi, lives behind me (my yard connects to her yard, but we're on different streets). Her two boys have been very successful with wrestling. My brother, Rob lives near by. Rob is my mentor regarding boats, ATVs and stuff like that. There isn't much he hasn't owned or tried. Go figure! Some of you might remember my sister, Juli (Bazel) Connelly. She has 4 kids and is a Grandma. She lives in Kasas now. And my other sister, Patti, lives in Tinley Park. A brave soul who still travels everyday downtown for work. As the summer season winds down, I'm feeling a little bummed out. Just the thought of being cooped up for the winter. I do love the Fall because there is still so much to do, but I must admit adhering to a schedule is probably my greatest weakness. I've been footloose and not accountable for many weeks. Now I have to get the kids to bed at a certain time. Wake up at a certain time. Everything has to be scheduled and even then ALL of it will not get done. But that's OK! Right? Because (God willing)I have tomorrow and I have my inner circle. There's so much more to write about and yet there's nothing more to say. I'm happy. I'm learning. I'm loved. I love. And I still think life is an adventure. I still can't wait to see what happens next. I wrote this because I hope it will encourage others to actually write something more than Q and A. The one thing that sticks in my mind is that I'm going to regret writing this story, but hey who cares, I haven't really seen anyone in 16 years. I will try to give you ALL an opportunity to poke at me at the reunion in October. I am trying rearrange my ever beloved SCHEDULE!
