Rex's Story

Life since High School, The school year 61-62 was a whirlwind of activity for me. I remember writing the Balad of the Nutrition Condition and singing it with Tom Carvey and Phil Nyborg in the Review 62 talent show. The teachers I most remember were Roger Elliott, Patricia Pratt, and Jeff Hare. I was active in the YMCA, and the summer after graduation went on a tour of Europe with 8 guys and our leader Bill Mead. We racked up 15 countries in 10 weeks, and had many adventures in our VW microbus. Craig Baumunk, Tom Carvey, Phil Nyborg, and other PV students also went along. After graduating from PV High, I attended Harbor College, University of Northern Colorado, and graduated from CSU Long Beach with a BA degree in Geography and a strong Biology minor. I got my secondary teaching certificate, and took a job teaching high school Biology in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I soon developed a keen interest in preserving urban open space, and participated in campaigns to protect natural lands in and around Albuquerque. In 1984, I went to Washington DC to receive the Gulf Oil Conservation Award for my volunteer efforts. This led to a job with the City as an open space planner and the first Superintendent of the Open Space Division. We went from a staff of 3 to 55 people, and we were managing 23,000 acres of natural lands when I retired in 1994. I moved to Oregon two years later, and returned to high school science teaching. In 2000, I moved to Arizona, taught a year, and decided it was time to hang up the chalk. For the past 8 years I have been working for a landscape products company in various capacities. I now work part time, and enjoy car restoration (my current project is a ‘63 Sunbeam Alpine), woodworking, hiking, boating, fishing, and other pastimes. I live in Bullhead City (on the Colorado ...Expand for more
River), am married to a Methodist Pastor, and have a daughter who lives in Albuquerque and teaches Science at the high school where I once taught. My parents Moved to Cottonwood, AZ, in 1980, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before my Dat's death in the summer of 2012 at age 96. I still play the guitar and sing now and then. I am grateful for those golden years in PV, my friends & classmates, and the chance to be in the first graduating class at PVHS. I had a blast seeing the old gang at the 50th reunion in August, 2012. Update 10/16. My Wife, Lujet, retired in June, 2016 and we moved to Corrales, New Mexico, just north of Albuquerque. We are living in a semi-rural area with a Pueblo style home on 3/4 acre. I built a workshop, and am enjoying woodworking and car restoration. We are taking some continuing ed. classes at UNM and soaking in the beautiful scenery and multi-cultural experience of New Mexico. Update 4/21 Last year I finished an e-book with a colleague on the history of Albuquerque’s open space program. I joined the Corrales Society of Artists and am looking forward to the studio tour this fall. I’ve been busy in the workshop building inventory for the tour. I posted some pictures of my work in the photo album. Sadly, my Mother passed away in February. She was 99 and the matriarch of the family. My Dad made it to 96, so I hope some of that longevity was passed on to us. My Daughter & Son-in-Law retired from teaching and live in nearby Albuquerque. So far, we have weathered the COVID pandemic without contracting it. Both my Wife, Lujet, and I have been vaccinated, and we look forward to a more normal life. Living in a semi-rural area has helped us stay distanced, but we miss our friends. We are planning to vacation in Southern Utah later this Spring.
