Rhonda's Story
I attended FJC after graduating in 1969 with a major in pre-nursing. That was not really my interest, I still loved to write, but my parents were advising me regarding careers and nursing was somrthing that was stable and one of the few career options open in the early 70's (that my parents approved of). During my time at FJC, I changed majors to Physical Therapy, intending to transfer to San Diego State. Instead, I chose to get married and moved with my then-husband to East Texas.
No colleges nearby and I never did earn a Bachelor's degree. I lived in a tiny Texas town with few jobs and concentrated on learning to train dogs. I had a German Shepherd pup and used a book as a guide. He impressed the locals, who had really never seen an obedience trained dog that was walked on a leash and obeyed commands. mall town = no leash law. I began beiong approached by people askiong for help with their dogs and started a little training business.
After moving to another, larger town (still very small) I became involved in the 4-H program as a dog project leader. My minions grew and I remained involved with 4-H as a dog project leader through the 90's and in every area I lived.
The move from Texas to Wyoming was hard for me. I really loved East Texas. I had horses as well and pretty much was satisfied with my life. No kids, but I wasn't ready. Wyoming was cold cold cold and my first experience with snow. Evanston is a...Expand for more
bout a 2 hour drive from Salt Lake City and is on the border of Wyoming and Utah. There I became interested in Law Enforcement as a career when I landed a job as a radio dispatcher for emergency services. I dispatched 3 fire departments, the Sheriff's Department and 2 city Police Departments plus the ambulance service and the Highway Patrol. When I started, there was no multi-line system. Each line was a separate phone and it could get pretty wild when things were hopping.
During this time I became a reserve deputy and then went on the become the first female officer in Evanston in 1977. I was the third female officer in the entire state. I could fill a book with stories from this time and from later in Sublette County, WY where I served as the Detective Lt. for the Sheriff's Office.
Along the way, I practiced Tae Kwon Do for 9 years earning a first and second degree blackbelt and a few medals in competition, rode hunter/jumper horses and competed in shows, competed in AKC dog obedience trials, had a wonderful son who is just turning 28. and was divorced and re-married after leaving law enforcement in 1997 and moving to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Today, I still ride a horse and even have a motorcycle. My husband and I are recently retired and having a great time. Maybe I will start writing stories from my law enforcement days and create that great novel after all.
Stand by, I may add more detail later.
