Richard's Story

I lived at 567 North 7th East My parents were Lester and Marva Allen and I had one sister, Joan, 10 years younger I had polio the week after graduation I worked at Gessford's Paint, Allen's grocery, OK Rubber Welders, and Three Way Motors in PG. I went to vocational school half of my last year of PHS learning body and fender repair. I joined the US Air Force in Jan 1953. I became an aircraft mechanic. I was stationed in Germany from 1954 to 1957. Landstuhl (Ramstein) AFB. I was on inactive reserves from 1957 to 1960. I worked at Nehi Beverage Co and the Thompson Flying Service (SLC) I obtained my certification as a Aircraft and Powerplant mechanic at Thompsons. I met Kathleen Hynst at the Riverside Roller Rink in February of 1957 We were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Dec 11, 1957 by Adam S. Bennion (Apostle) We lived in our little home in Murray and had our first child, Katrina Leslie Allen in August of '58 In 1960 we moved to Dutch Gap, VA, (Kathleen's home). I joined the Virginia Air National Guard in '60. Served from 1960 to 1963. We had Teresa Janai ( our second daughter) in 1960. We moved back to Utah in 1963 into our original home. I joined the Utah Air National Guard where I served for 18 years. In 1965 I started work at Hill Air Force Base, serving for 30 years. While working at HAFB and UTANG I attended U of U and WSC, graduating BSA in 1977. In 1973 we took on a Navaho daughter (Mary Jean Billie) and had her for 4 years. She is just like a daughter and we have stayed close ever since then. We travel to Virginia often as our closest family and friends are there. We have been on eight cruises (Love them). tried to keep track of our PHS friends through the years an notify those I can contact of the status of each of them. I was planning a 70th reunion but big C got in the way. Kathy and I are still kicking and hope to continue for a while. I graduated from USAF Air War College and Air Command and Staff College while working. I was awarded certification as a Quality Engineer in 1977. We had three more kids , Launi '65; Loren'67; and Tamara in 1971. We moved to Layton in 1970 into a nice home close to HAFB. I served in many capacities in the LDS Church including Bishop from '84 to '89. I retired HAFB in 1990 and taught at Embry Riddle Air University for three years. I retired from the USAF in 1993. In Civil Service (HAFB) I retired as a GS-12 and in the USAF as a Chief Master Sergeant. Kathy and I worked at Fieldcrest Cabinets and the Precision Machine shop during my retirement. I also worked for Early Birds Company restoring antique aircraft for 2 years. I Served on the Layton City Board of Adjustments for 15 years (4 as President) I started serving as Layton Rep on the Davis County Mosquito Board in 1987 (still there as of 2021) In 1989 I joined the Beehive statesmen Barbershop chorus, beginning my love for Barbershop Music. I was there for 20 years then I joined the North Front Sound Chorus (still there). I attended earlier PHS reunions and then presided over the 2011 and 2016 reunions. I recently was diagnosed with the "Big C" but am doing well (at least for now). I am a member of the Territorial Pioneers . My grandmother was half Ute Indian I love to swim. I try to get 2 miles in a week. To date I have swam 1811 total miles.
