Richard Annin:

CLASS OF 1977
Grass valley, CA

Richard's Story

Life After high school, I went to UC Berkeley. I also took a wide variety of classes at Laney college in Oakland. My second time at Berkeley was as a Chinese language major, with some Korean on the side. The next years were spent doing professional woodwork and metalwork. I ran my own shop for 20 years. My projects included custom bicycles, furniture, and sculpture. I have worked on motorcycles, cars, boats, aircraft, and trains at different times. Over the years I have had an interesting collection of friends, many of them artists and musicians. I have worked as a stage hand for many bands; you probably have CDs of a few of them. I have played around with many instruments, but am working at becoming a reasonable electric bass player. In February, 2003 I decided to do something different. I bought a one-way ticket to Shanghai, China. Within a few weeks I had found a good job as an English taecher. Shortly after that, I met the woman who I am now married to. Anna and I moved to Beijing together in June, 2003 and got married in August. She wished to be in Beijing to be near her family. Since coming to Beijing, I have taught at several different schools. At one company, I managed 14 schools and about 150 teachers, half foreign, the rest Chinese. It was hell, so I went back to teaching. I am currently teaching at two of the best high schools in Beijing. At one, there are 12 classes a week, ten at the other. Each class has 50+ students, so I "get" to deal with over 1,100 high school students each week. Classes are only 40-45 minutes each, so I really have to try to pack a lot into each session. Sometimes it's great, sometimes I hate it. It usually takes some time to get a class to respond well. They tend to be shy, but I need to make them speak. I'm getting pretty good, or I wouldn't be allowed to teach at these two schools. Since they are top schools in Beijing, they are some of the best in China. I am also teaching at an American construction eng...Expand for more
ineering company. I have one class of 12, and another with 4 students. My job is to help them learn to communicate in English so they understand their managers better. I really enjoy these classes, and the pay is better. On Saturday morning I teach two high school boys at my home. They have been coming for 16 months, and have really improved. They will go to Canada to study this fall. In the afternoon, I teach a 7 year old boy. It is a lot of work, but the money is good. We will be able to buy a condo late this year. We sure need more space, because we have four cats. We also are planning to have a baby next year. Yes, it will be my first; this is my first marriage. I waited a long time, but am very happy. At home we speak some Chinese, some English. My wife's English is better than my Chinese, but I'm catching up. Nobody in her family speaks ANY English. She is from a very small village about 150 miles north of Beijing. They grow corn, rice, and soybeans, mostly by hand. I really enjoy spending time there. The last visit was pretty sad; we had to bury her 90 year old grandmother. She was a very sweet person, and Anna was very close to her. I have three close non-Chinese friends: from the L.A. area, Iowa, and Canada. Their wives are also Chinese. The Canadian was born in Brazil. He and I are starting a business importing iron ore to China from Brazil. It is very difficult, but we hope to be successful. It's kind of strange negotiating $150,000,000 contracts in a second language. I haven't been outside China for over two years. I did go to Hong Kong last April for a visa renewal. My mother came last May for my wedding reception, as did a very good friend I know from San Francisco who has been living in Thailand for over three years. He also made one other visit, in October 2004. Anna and I hope to visit California this summer. If she can get a visa we will probably come. She really wants to see where I grew up. However, I now consider China home
