Richard's Story

Life Currently living in Ohio, I have been something of a gypsy. I have lived in 12 states, visited 49 of the 50, two U.S. territories and 18 foreign countries. Married (second), I have two adult daughters, Jennifer lives in South Carolina with her husband Steven and her daughters, Kaitlyn and Addison, and son, Brent; and Christy, who also lives in South Carolina with her husband Chris. I also have a stepson and a stepdaughter, Nelson and Chantel, both live in southern Ontario in Canada. Chantel has two daughters, Morgan and Quinn, and a son, Gage. I have been a professional journalist most of my life, in addition to working for nearly 30-some odd years for a variety of daily and non-daily newspapers in a wide range of positions, I also have been a "war correspondent" during Operation Just Cause (the invasion of Panama) in 1989 and a teacher and instructor. I also have won multiple journalistic awards, both for writing and newspaper design. A veteran of two combat eras, I served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Naval Reserve in the Vietnam Era (but not in Vietnam); and was in the Army National Guard when I was called up for service in the Persian Gulf War, during both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm where I served as an Army public affairs specialist in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. I medically retired from the U.S. Army as a civilian public affairs officer and editor of the post newspaper at Fort McPherson, outside Atlanta, Ga. School Let's see if I can remember: I went to kindergarten in Glen Ellyn Ill. I split first grade between a school in Britt, Iowa, and Springfield, Mo. Second Grade through the first half of 4th Grade was at J.C. Freemont Elementary in Glendale, CA. Second half of 4th Grade was at the old main elementary school in downtown Tustin, CA. 5th Grade was at Guinn Foss in Tustin, CA. 6th Grade was at Sycamore Elementary in Tustin, CA. 7th and 8th was at C.E. Utt Intermediate (even though we spent the fall in classes at Columbus Tustin Intermediate)(class of 63) in Tustin, CA Grades 9 through 12 were at Tustin High School (Class of 67) in Tustin, CA. College After I graduated Tustin High School in Tustin, CA, in June 1967, that fall I went to study engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I quickly figured out that engineering was not my field, so at mid year I transferred from the school of engineering to the school of arts and sciences with major in history. (Unfortunately, I still flunked out) In January 1969, I enrolled at Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo, CA, and earned an associates in social sciences in June 1970. In the fall of 1970, I transferred to Kansas State University in Manhattan KS to major in history. Unfortunately, Uncle Sugar intervened in September 1971 and called me up for 21 months on active duty in the U.S. Navy. In June 1973, I returned to KSU to pursue my bachelor's degree with a double major: history and journalism. I received my BS in May 1974. Did some graduate work, but never seriously pursued a MA or higher. Workplace After getting my bachelor's in journalism and mass communications in 1974, I went to work briefly for a small weekly newspaper in Kinsley, KS, before moving on to the Dodge City (KS) Daily Globe for three years. In 1977, did a brief stint as editor of a trio of weekly newspapers in Bucklin, KS. At the end of 1977, I moved on to be the wire editor for The Eagle in Bryan-College Station, TX (Home of Texas A&M University). Stayed there until early 1981, when I moved up to Texarkana (TX-AR)where I was news editor and later assistant managing editor for the Texarkana Gazette. At the end of 1988, I moved to Fayetteville, NC, first as assistant city editor for the Fayetteville Observer and then as military affairs writer. (Here is where I got to play 'war correspondent' in Panama for the 1989 takedown of Manuel Noriega). When the paper merged with Fayetteville Times, I was RIFed about the time I was called up for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. After I got back from the Gulf in mid-1991, I...Expand for more
did a brief stint as an instructor at the Defense Information School before moving to Laurens, SC, to be editor of a three-days-a-week newspaper. In late 1997, I took a post in Stephenville TX as editor of the Empire-Tribune, a 6-days-a-week daily newspaper. In July 1998, I took a job as news editor for the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in Bluefield WVa, but by November I was back in SC working in Laurens again. In March of 2002, I began working as a Department of the Army Civilian as a public affairs specialist with the Public Affairs Office for the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem in Atlanta GA, where -- amongst my other duties -- I was the editor/staff of the installations' weekly newspaper. In November 2005, the installation was formally put on the list of bases to be closed by 2011. I was medically retired as an Army civilian in May 2006 Military My parallel military/reserve career played a big part of my life. I joined the Naval Reserve in March 1970 (to stay out of rice paddies) with the unit in Santa Ana (At LTA or the USMCAS Tustin) and took a split basic training at NTC San Diego and aboard the USS Bauer (DE-1025). In September 1970, I transferred to the NRU in Manhattan, KS. In September 1971, I was called up for 2 years as a Seaman/E-3 and reported to NTC Great Lakes for training at the Gunner's Mate Class A School. I graduated top of my class in January 1971 and was assigned to the Gearing-class destroyer USS Meredith (DD-890). In February 1972, Meredith embarked on a seven-month deployment to the Mediterrean. Meredith returned to her homeport of Mayport in September 1972. While aboard her, I was promoted to GMG3/E-4. In May 1973, I was transferred to NAS Millington for separation from active duty and in June 1973 I was reassigned to NRU Manhattan KS. In September 1974, I transferred to NRU Hutchinson KS. While at Hutchinson, I was promoted to GMG2/E-5. In April 1975, I transferred to the IRR (Standby Reserve) and in March 1976, I was discharged from the USNR. In June 1976, I joined the Kansas Army National Guard in Dodge City KS as an E-5 Fire Direction Computer with HHB,1-161 FA (8-in SP). After graduating top of my class at the NCO Academy in 1977, I was promoted to SSG/E-6 and made assistant BN FDC Chief. In January 1978, I transferred to the Texas ARNG, to C Co., 1st BN (ABN) 143rd Infantry, 36th Airborne Brigade, in Bryan TX, where I was the senior FDC computer in the company Mortar Platoon. In April 1980, C Co. was redesignated as L Troop, 3rd Sqdn, 163rd Armored Cavalry Rgt. and, later, I was promoted to platoon sergeant/E-7. In March 1981, I transferred to Cbt Spt Co, 5th BN, 112th Armor, 3rd Brigade, 49th Armored Div, TxARNG, where I was first FDC section chief and then platoon sergeant of the unit's heavy mortar platoon. In March 1988, I transferred to the NCARNG to HHC, 2-252 AR, in Raeford NC as a mortar section sgt. In September 1989, I was attached to the 382nd Mobile PA Det. in Raliegh NC. In August 1990, the 382nd was mobilized for Operation Desert Storm and deployed to Saudi Arabia in September. Initially at the Joint Info Bureau in Dhahran, it later was reassigned to HQs, 3rd Army (ARCENT) in Riydhad. During this period I was the unit NCOIC/PA Supervisor and editor of DesertDragon for XVIII Abn Corps and DuneTribune for ARCENT. I eventually deployed to Kuwait City, Kuwait, after its liberation as media relations officer for Task Force Freedom. On Good Friday 1991 (late March), the 382nd began its trip home to the US of A and demobilization. I was separated from my second active duty tour April 30, 1991. In July 1991, I did a four-week stint at the Defense Information School as a mini-course instructor. In October 1992, I transferred out of the 382nd MPAD to the Retired Reserve. In March 2002, I 'rejoined' the Army as a civilian public affairs specialist. In May 2006, I medically retired from the Department of the Army civilian workforce with a heart condition. I have since written an autobiography. It can be found on lulu.com
