Richard's Story

I'm a sort of renaissance kind of fellow, equally at home in the arts or sciences... taking neither of them lightly nor too seriously. After a life spent with much learning and skill-building, I've been fortunate (some would say blessed) to welcome into my small sphere of family a group of women and girls that have enriched my life greatly. I have a number of different entries on my resume. Computer programmer (yes, I was once one of those pesky rocket scientists), sports photographer, screenwriter, computer technician, school photo printer, web page designer, ULC minister, graphic artist, art department manager, author, fine-artist, and a few other things just to make for an interesting lifetime. Now that so many of the younguns in our lives are setting out to conquer the world, it's hard not to reflect back to a time when we were doing the same thing. I feel very fortunate about my time at Potomac. There are a ton of good memories, and a lot of good friends...a fair number of y'all I still keep in touch with (wish it was more, but you know how it is...you start not being able to find people after a while). I'm clicking through the "Story Ideas" box and thought it might be interesting to try a few of the questions... "Which teacher would you love to see again? Why?" That one's pretty easy: Ms Patricia Wiley. What can I say...had her from Algebra II/Trig thru Calculus. She expected excellence, but was also a friend. And she had that one crucial thing that I think all of the best teachers have (certainly the ones I had): a passion from what th...Expand for more
ey were teaching. "How do you hope old friends remember you?" I guess as long as they remember me without having to use too many curse words, I'm ahead of the game :-) "To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom?" Except when I'm in the doghouse, any time I spend with my chosen family members is a very happy time for me. I've been tending to smile a lot these past several years. "Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise?" Other than finding people I'm pleased to think of as family, the biggest surprise was discovering that caring for a parent dying from one of the nastier dementias was NOT the hardest thing I ever had to do. "You get one do-over [which must be taken]. What do you do differently?" I added that little condition as I'd otherwise do the typical answer and say, "Nothing. I wouldn't be here if I'd done something differently." But, if I was required to change one thing, I guess I'd...ummmm...I guess that I'd have let some people know what I thought of them (good things, not bad things) in a more timely fashion. Argh, this is hard. No...I wouldn't have changed anything that would have mattered. I've ended up in a good place and the journey has been interesting. And that's enough of those questions. Hope that gives you a little peek into what's become of me. Now, I'm going back to the class list and reminisce. From having done all those class activities, including yearbook and reunion stuff, I feel like I know most of you...actually, I think I probably do. Good memories.
