Richard's Story

Life I left Tucson High in May 1965 with the encouragement of Dean Rhoda. This was due to my repeated ditching from certain classes and I didn’t want to notify my parents that Mr. Rhoda wanted to meet with them. I joined the Navy on my way home that same morning and within two weeks after my 17th birthday (May (65) I was on my way to Basic Training at San Diego. My good fortune was that the placement testing pointed me towards being a Navy Medical Corpsman. later that same year graduated from Naval Hospital Corps School at Balboa Naval Hospital (Dec.65) My first duty station was Oaknoll Naval Hospital in Oakland CA. In spring of 1966 I received orders to attend Field Medical Service School at Camp Pendelton. After graduation (Sep 66) I was deployed to Viet Nam and to what became my most significant contribution of my Military Service. I was assigned to the 2nd Battalion - 4th Marine Regiment, The Magnificent Bast—ds. There’s a book writt...Expand for more
