Richard's Story

A Profile----New and Improved No, not me, just my profile. In order to fill in some blanks I have completely redone my profile for my Classmates page(s). To begin with, I must state that I was a “military brat” and as such, I did have the occasion to move, frequently I might add, thus attending multiple schools, sometimes during the same academic year. OK. OK, the start. I was born in California, outside of Los Angeles, in what is no longer the small city of Glendale. Now to skip forward about 10 years or so, after attending eight elementary schools in California, Texas, and one in Florida I ended up in Homestead, Florida for Junior High and my first of three high schools. My first high school was South Dade High School, a 9-12 school, and I was really like a lost child when I started due to my young and tender age of 12. It was really hard to make friends at that level due to my age. I do remember a couple that were in my Advance Biology class, I think the teacher was Mr. Peeples (he looked like Wally Cox, you know Mr. Peepers), anyhow they were Libby Baker and Danny Steele. I went out for football my junior year, but I was not only light, but slow too. OH well. Then in December of my junior year, that would be 1959, I moved to Saginaw, Michigan to complete the second half of the 11th grade (this was done to keep my schools attended that year to only 2 instead of 3 due to military transfers). That is how I ended up at Arthur Hill H.S. I was staying with my aunt and uncle and their kids and one of them, Charles Schilz, went to AHHS. I did not make any long lasting friendships there. Some called me Tex, even though I had just moved there from Florida. Go figure! With my junior year over, I moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts and onto Otis Air Force Base. The housing area I lived in was had me attend Bourne (I was only there for my Senior Year and graduated in 1961) rather than Falmouth. I really liked the OLD school, overlooking the canal for a couple of classes, then cutting lunch and heading through the woods to Ats for lunch and then trying to make it back and not be tardy. Sometimes we made it and sometimes, well you know. Moving into Bourne for my Senior year wasn’t quite as bad as it may seem, my dad’s entire squadron moved up from Florida so I knew quite a few kids from there and then I made a few new friends almost all of which were from the base. I use to run with Bob and Bill Hardin, Bill was a senior, and Jake Gould. My girlfriend was Marilyn Jetton, she was in the class o 1963. After graduating, I attended Florida State University for a year and a half. I could not make up my mind what to study and changed my major about 8 times in three semesters. My girlfriend, Marilyn, moved to Orlando in late 1961, which meant that I only had a four-hour drive to get down to see her. That was nice. In December of ’62, while home (now in New Mexico) for the holidays, Marilyn and I broke up, and I ended up transferring to Midwestern University (now called Midwestern State University) in Wichita Falls, TX. I could not continue the USAF ROTC that I had started at FSU so I switched to Army ROTC. In 1968 I got married, that part of the story I will skip over as I would rather forget it. I graduated there and received my commission as a 2Lt. in the Infantry Branch in August of 1969. The Army was an experience: Ft. Benning, GA, then on to Augsburg, Germany and later to Stuttgart, Germany before heading to the Republic of South Korea. All of this was in ...Expand for more
just under two and half years. Then I made the 2nd biggest mistake of my life, and I separated, just a couple months shy of making Captain (the biggest mistake was in 1968). So, I went back to Texas, back to school and acquired a second major and minor and then entered the education arena as a secondary school educator. After correcting the first and biggest mistake in my life, I moved from Texas to Florida. I dabbled in retail for a few years then then went back into secondary education. During my time as a teacher, and a coach (football, track, basketball, and softball) I garnered a couple of distinctions. In 1982 I married again, oh if only she had been there first. While teaching Social Studies I was awarded three honors for teaching Economics, second in my county, First in the state, and then an Honorable Mention at the national level. In 2002 I started teaching a new program Aerospace Technology, which was basically a pre-aeronautical engineering program, at a magnet high school. It was in 2009 that I received the Educator Excellence Award from the Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The award is given every other year to a maximum of nine educators at the pre-collegiate level. This is a by nomination only competition from a pool of educators from across the world. I felt so honored to be in the Class of 2009, to travel to Washington D.C. for the presentation at a large gala in the presence of some of the top educators, scientists, and astronauts in the world. In 2011 and 2012 I taught An Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering for Duke TIP on the campus of the University of Kansas. You can find a 11 second or so clip of one of our projects on You Tube. Just search for Duke Tip AT KU Glider NOTE you need to use the AT sign and not type in the word. I taught some basic aerodynamics, introductory physics, and Auto CAD, and then the last week of the 3-week program the students were in the lab to create a glider from three 4’ x 8’ sheets of Styrofoam. These students were awesome, gifted and talented middle school kids. What a challenge. Along the way, in 1988, I became a licensed pilot, and later earned my instrument and multi-engine ratings. When the rental rates became astronomical, I ceased my flying. I did however continue as an FAA Ground Instructor and taught Basic, Advanced, and Instrument Ground Schools. My wife, I call her my WIFI, and I love to travel. For years we alternated between New England and the West for our ski trips (those are out now due to knee and hip replacements---mine) and some local day trips. We have travelled to Europe, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, as well as Ireland. Here in the states we have been to the Grand Canyon twice, Vegas and Reno multiple times, and two trips to Alaska, one of which was a cruise. Now I am planning another excursion to Alaska, the salmon we caught---my wifi like to fish---in 2016 is gone so we have to go back and catch some more. The 2016 trip was to the Wasilla area, and the ’19 trip will be to Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula. That just about sums it up. I do not really remember anyone from Michigan, I am sorry about that, but anyone there remembers me----refresh my memory. In Homestead, there would be Charles Frye (sp), Jack Gilbreath, and Charlene Burrows; most of the others that I knew well were associated with the base and moved to Massachusetts. If anyone knows anything about Marilyn Jetton or her sister Anita, drop me a line. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to any of your questions or responses.

Dinner going in the oven. Yumm!
CHILI RELLENOS CASSEROLE.
Not bad. I left the flour out, so it weeped a tiny bit but it still held its shape when I served it. I got in a mix reading my instructions from my phone. I will not try that again.
It is 48 outside. This is the 1st of what we hope is many fires in the fireplace.
Cricket just loves her fireplace. Patches isn't ready to settle down......yet.
Pan-seared scallops, jasmine rice, asparagus, and Mango-black bean salsa. Pretty tasty.
Lizabeth's nurse is hard at work.......not.
