Richard's Story

I recently retired from 42 years as an English Professor, mostly in the state of Minnesota. My wife and I recently moved in to a new home set up for retirement, kind of out in the country, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, 60 miles northwest of Minneapolis. My academic specialties were all periods of American literature and Medieval British and European literature. I was also a college administrator for awhile as well. I taught for 38 years at St. Cloud State University, the second largest state school in Minnesota, for 1 year at Western Washington University, and for 3 years at the University of Oregon, where I earned my Ph.D. in 1978. We usually divide our time beween our cabin in Northern Minnesota lake country and our St. Cloud home. Our cabin is in an area where there are 490 lakes within 30 miles. We do a lot of cycling on forest trails and kayaking on local lakes. Yes it can be cold here, but the summers and falls can be beautiful. Actually Minnesotans seem to be happiest in the winter for some reason. Winter is just about one month too long. We are a short drive from Minneapolis where we go for cultural activities and sports.
