Richard's Story

Life Living in Indianapolis Indiana as a professional trombone player. In High School I always knew I wanted to make a career in music, but I really didn't know how. I still don't know how. It's a hard career, but I love it. I get to perform all types of music and with all types of groups; from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to the Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra. I also get to travel a bit with touring groups such as: Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, The Temptations and The 4 Tops. What can I say...life is good! School I usually don't think about High School. We were all going through some rough times. I wasn't the 'coolest' kid, I was a band and orchestra geek. (and proud of it!) However, somehow, I always seemed to date beautiful girls! Being in the band had its advantages!! The band director, Mr. Rogers was by far the most inspirational teacher I had. Not only was he a great teacher, but he was a trombone player (like me) and we could relate to each other on different levels. Another teacher that stands out in my mind is Ms. Spellman. She...Expand for more
was the first (and only) teacher in High School that inspired me outside of music. I have become friends with both Mr. Rogers and Ms. Spellman through the long years after High School and for that, I'm grateful. College I couldn't wait to get out of High School and out of EDWARDSVILLE! I left and really never came back. I do miss some people, and I regret not keeping in touch, but that is why I'm here. I attended the Indiana University School of Music and earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Trombone Performance. I took a couple of years off after undergrad to work and play (I did tours with Jack Jones, Jimmy Doresy, Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme, 4 Tops and Temptations). Then I began my Masters Degree also at IU, but this time in Jazz Studies. I was an Assistant Instructor to David Baker. I was actually paid to go to school. I didn't really sleep for a couple of years, and it was incredibly hard work, but it was worth every painfull second! There just isn't enough room here to tell of all the great stories I have from college. You'll just have to ask!
