Richard's Story
3/18/09 Believe it or not, after a less than stellar high school academic performance, I actually attended and graduated from Texas State Tech College with an AAS in Civil Engineering Technology and went to work for the City of Austin. Decided I didn't have enough school so I went to Austin Community College to get an AS in Mathematics while I worked for the Texas DOT. Figured I still wasn't smart enough so went to UT at Austin to get my BS in Civil Engineering. Nope, still didn't feel smart enough so obtained my Masters in Engineering at UT. Figured at that point that maybe it was just me so the Mrs. and I moved to Washington DC to use my new 'smarts'. Figured out that I really wasn't missing anything the whole time ... just needed to look at the woman that's been at my side for 28 years - my lovely bride. Turns out she's the one that kept me pushing, kept me striving, and kept me happy. (OK, really, the education was very, very tough with failed classes, retaking classes, studying harder than anybody should have to do, struggling, and finally graduating. I can honestly say that anyone that wants to get an engineering degree can do it - I'm living proof that you don't have to be very smart to do it - just determined and persistent as heck) Now I have my own engineering firm and am about to celebrate 11 years of business. (E-Squared Engineering) Oh, and me and the Mrs. have the travel bug - BAD!! Since I started my company we've enjoyed visits to England, Scotland, Ireland, France (Paris, Normandy Beaches, Mont St. Michel, Rouen), Italy (Rome, Venice, Como, Milan, Turin, Vatican City), Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, China (Beijing, Hong Kong), Africa (Liberia, South Africa), Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya), Central America, the Caribbean (St. Martin, Bahamas, Pu...Expand for more
erto Rico), Viet Nam (Saigon aka Ho Chi Minh City), Australia (Cairns <Great Barrier Reef>, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney) and have been fortunate to visit all but 5 of the 50 United States. Next week - we're off to Sweden. Frequent flyer miles are the BEST!
We take our surviving parents (her mom or my dad) on a vacation every couple of years - we alternate parents. And of course, we go alone multiple times a year to many places around the world. It's GREAT to be able to do what you want to do with your best friend at your side. God is good!!
Life is good and we live by the saying that 'to whom much is given, much is expected.' We KNOW that we are truly blessed and have been given wonderful opportunities that are far beyond what we deserve. Following that, we do a lot of mission work in Honduras and also in West Africa. While we don't have nor want our own children, we feel that we have very many children that we love and miss and go visit in Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Central America) and Monrovia, Liberia (West Africa). They unknowingly remind us of what life is like for so many people in the world and that the problems we and our friends have are miniscule compared to the lives of the children that love, live and are happy in a land with no running water, no electricity, little to no food, no parents (or parents that literally have nothing except the cardboard and plywood sheets that they use for shelter under a tree). They have so much to teach us and those of you that do mission work will know EXACTLY what I mean.
We live in the Washington, DC area but work all over the country.
Trying to live one day at a time and enjoying it like it will never come again.
