Richard's Story
Life
After AUHS I went to L.A. for good surf, school and work. Met my wife in art school and studied some engineering. Worked as a commercial and fine artist for a few years and then became a machinist and model maker, although keeping an art studio on the side. At Gulf&Western I became an electro-mechanical design engineer, inventing new machines. I then worked as an automation engineer at Teledyne Relays for 8 years. We started going to Europe once or twice a year for 3-5 weeks at a time. Always rent a car and take the back roads to avoid the tourist traps. In '85 I got a job in Petaluma, Ca. for a Swiss hi-tech company. They make microscopically-detailed, high-precision components in ultra-hard materials like ruby, sapphire and diamond for micro-electronic and bio-medical industries. I invented and developed new processes, machines and products. Since they have facilities in Switzerland, Singapore, China and the Phillipines I got to visit some of these to install new systems and train the staff. I was also invited by the Debeers Diamond Research Facility in Ascot, England as a guest researcher fo...Expand for more
r a short time. By this time we were hosting a series of French exchange students and became good friends with their parents so I would leave Susan with them in France while I worked at headquarters in Lyss, Switzerland. In '98 after a long, difficult sojourn in Singapore I had a stress-induced heart attack and quit. Went to Bali to recover and fell in love with the island and people. Took my wife back to see if she could live there but it was not to be. Now I work at my home studio restoring antique Japanese miniature art for museums and collectors. I have specialized in certain types for 30 years and make new ones, too. It is a nice combination of art, craftsmanship and engineering skills. I still surf when there is warm water but play racquetball 3-4 times a week and compete in tournaments. I also like to cook and forage for wild mushrooms. I've foraged all my life and studied mycology in college. Aviation has also been important. My dad and I still fly the plane he built but I didn't finish my license. It is more fun to fly in Oregon. My interest is also the design, history and archeology of aircraft.
