Richard's Story
After graduation, I went to Mobile College (now University of Mobile) and got a B.A. in psychology. I met my wife, Janice Duke, at college and we were married in August of 1976. We left for seminary in Memphis, Tennessee after working one year in a warehouse to put away money for my seminary work. I graduated from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in 1980 with a MDiv Degree. I pastored two churces over a period of 10 years, and we had 3 children; 2 sons and a daughter.
We joined the Army in 1988 and served as an Army Chaplain for 20 years. I served in the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and did a tour in Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003-2004. I had a bout with throat cancer in 2006 and that has limited my talkin...Expand for more
g ability. I retired from the military in July of 2008. I just retired in 2021 serving as the Mental Health and Trauma Chaplain at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia.
My oldest son received his PhD in missions and is working in Knoxville helping refugees. He married and has given me two grandsons. My middle son did his 3 years in the Army and settled down in Salem, Oregon with his wife who is a nurse. He went to Iraq in 2008. He has given me a grandson and a granddaughter. My daughter finished her degree in Psychology in May of 2008. She is now working as a Clinical Occupational Therapist Assistant at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA. My wife is retired, and we are enjoying our time together.
