Richard's Story
Life
After high school graduation, I went to UT Austin [my parents thought forever!] and graduated from in 1968 with a BSME, then went on to Cornell University for a year, then came back, got married to a lovely Fort Worth girl, Diana McGaha, whom I had started dating as a Senior at UT, and went on back to UT/Austin to get an MSME. After college [in 1971....took me a long time!], we moved to Chattanooga Tennessee where I first worked for a small Company called CMI Systems, and then changed to 3M Technical Ceramics Division. In 1976, I had an opportunity to go to work for a Company called Arbrook [back in Arlington, TX] so back we moved. Arbrook was a division of Johnson & Johnson, and in 1982, they merged it with another division of J&J called Surgikos, and in two years, I found myself without a job!! As the result of being fired from J&J, I found my current company, Universal Fasteners, in Lawrenceburg, KY [where I am VP of Engineering]. We were able to become part owners ...Expand for more
of this small company just before a Japanese zipper manufacturer, YKK, purchased it in 1987 and that profit paid for our three kids college education! Funny how things work out some time.
Universal Fasteners makes things like jeans buttons for Levi, Gap, Wrangler, Lee, CK [I personally designed the logo jeans button that you see on CK Jeans!], Tommy Helfiger, etc. as well as a lot of the snaps on jackets and the small snaps you see on baby clothes like William Carter and Healthtex.
Since the Apparel Business is a somewhat global business, I have gotten to travel this world a lot more than I ever thought I would....12 times to Japan, 4 times to Hong Kong, 2 times to China, Europe 3 times. Mexico [too much] and Central America!
Brett, our oldest, is an electrician here in town, Melissa, our middle child, has a degree from Baylor University and is working in a local Bank; and Paige, our youngest, has a degree in Art/Advertising and is working for the Louisville Magazine.
