Richard's Story

Life I940: I was at Horace Mann school beginning with afternoon kindergarten, to morning Kindergarten and to the 6th grade. At first we lived right across the street at 4048, and a year later moved to the next block at 3939. I recall the little old man who sold pretzels for a penny outside the gate. Pettit's drug store up on the corner. Cozy's delicatessen (?) on the other corner across from Kolb's grocery. Recesses were segregated: boys on the east side and girls on the west. Iron fence separating. S'ok. We liked it that way. Teachers were all older Victorian spinsters: Miss Siedler, Miss Feldner (going deaf) , Miss Westfelinger, Miss Raven (She looked like one?), Miss Gilbert (she wore a wig) , Miss Woodson (very nice and patient), Miss Keller (King Kong Keller) Miss Berkeley (did NOT want to cross her!), Miss Coolidge (8th grade, I never got to her). They were something! Remember the Browns and the Cardinals in the 1944 world series, and almost everybody rooting for the Browns. 5th grade: I was in Miss Ravens room on the 2nd floor. Mr Murray, Mr Lehman, Mr Wentz, and Mr VanVleet were the principals. Kindergarten teacher was a Miss Miller, a nice patient older lady. My classmates, playmates, and co-troublemakers included Walter Schmidt, Jim Chatham, Buddy Tannelund, Jack Ashby, Donald Weinerth, Bob Pierce, Gene Hoefle, Ed Dahm, Don Hector, Jim Lannen, Buddy (Charles) Froehle, Alvin Lohbeck, Wynn Church, Dave Wheeler, Harold Eddens, Louis "Bobo" Schaeffer (lived across the street and went to Holy Family), Gene Farmer, Boyd Blackwell, Jim Wallace. Kenny Ault. Girls? the only one I remember well.is JoAnn Brncic (pronounced burn-sic) First grade girl-firiend. Lived up on the other side of Morganford road. Was it on Alfred. And Shirley Frieze who was my 3rd grade girl-friend. Who did I forget? Rosemary Livesey, Gail Schmidt.. Ran into Jim Chatham years ...Expand for more
later at U Mo, where he graduated in Electrical Engineering. Think he's now retired and living in Baltimore. And -- lonnnnnng story -- stayed in touch with Eugene Farmer throughout life, He died about three years ago in Las Vegas. I helped spread his ashes in central Idaho. And saw Gene Hoefle some in high school: I think he was at Kirkwood, and I was at Webster Groves. Got into a lot of petty little-boy violations with hall monitors and crossing guards at Horace Mann, and some not so petty scuffs as well. Walter Schmidt and I got our butts paddled hard with a board by Mr Wentz down in the boiler room in the early 6th grade. Very memorable. Saw him again in 1957 in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood. At Taussig Open Air School for 1946-48. It was at 1616 S. Grand, in with Gallaudette for the deaf. I took the Arsenal bus from Gustine and Juniata and the Grand street car line. Sometimes the Southampton line. Five (5) in my "graduating" class from Taussig. Besides myself, Robert LaVo, Ed Lindenmann, George Noe (we called him "Moe". What else?), and Carolyn Pigg. Almost no information on any of them since. Did keep in touch with Ruth Shoults, who was a year behind me at Taussig, and a sort of informal foster-adoptee in my family. Long story short is that she died in Pacific MO about two years ago of a home fire. Smoking in bed one night late. It was Ruth Obermoeller then. Currently in Tucson AZ. Eventually a career in engineering, and in higher education. Just finished 24 years at University of Arizona. Home in the Tucson Mountains with a lot of birds, wildlife, and cactuses. Retired October 2011. Kids (3 of my own, but it depends on how you count them.) Same problem with grandkids. 6, or is it 9, or is it 12? Could be worse: I still have all my teeth and all my hair. And you..? rhh ("pete") look me up on University of Arizona web site.
