Richard's Story

Life: Lots of school time after Edison - Hamline Univ, Stanford Medical, U of M for business and for public health. Then medical practice, public health work, I founded two data companies, crashed two companies, then reentered medicine. My wife and I have farm a bit north of the Twin Cities. Unreconstructed Hippies, I suppose. Tried real estate investment and flipping, but no more! Now I travel, hunting rocks for my lapidary work. This included Australia on the Great Barrier Reef for part of several years. I did a little occupational medicine when I returned home to the US, and fully retired in May of 2017. When in other countries I collect rough gemstones and later get them cut. I made jewelry until my shop accidentally burned down along with my house. New house now. I'd love to hear YOUR stories if you are into travel or crafts, etc. Another of these 'Story Wizard' things prompts me ... What about me would surprise everyone from high school? Well - during Edison times I was your basic intellectual mild-mannered nerd sort who shied from much social contact with classmates. Plans then included a math career or research. During college I took a job for summers out of financial urgency at a summer camp for disadvantaged kids. There I discovered that I truly liked kids, staff, and acting out in Oh So Many Ways! MC for gatherings, leadership, and really became a people person. Math was dropped. I guess I felt the Sexual Revolution was understaffed, so I volunteered for duty. Went to California for med school with flowers in my hair. But never inhaled, I think they say. My military time could have been used for Mash episodes. Later when family medicine became boring I worked with the arctic tribes, the...Expand for more
n stopped clinical work and did more business training. My data companies went national, but the investors realized that I never cared a fig about money, so they did a little Arab Spring number on me and sent me out to pasture. Where I remain. Dick Update 2014 Now fully retired, I spend more time rockhounding in the Southwest. Amusing anecdote - stepped off the plane returning from AZ - into last April's 20" of late snow. Zipped over to my WI farm to open it up, get things running. Hit the bed like a rock.... 2am awoke to crash/tinkling and saw flames engulfing the far corner of the house. Just had time to grab a robe and cell phone and sapphire case then out a window. Nice look - wearing just a bathrobe, cowboy boots, in 20in fluffy white snow. House burned to the ground despite fire dept due to 50+ mph winds. Lots of changes, but spirits still high, enjoying the challenges of general contractor work. Dick Update 2016 I just cannot get the knack of retirement. To help my old StPaul clinic, I agreed to practice full time again, 5d/wk! Have not done so many hours since 1979! I just do Occ Med, injuries and physicals for the workforce, so it's just 8 to 5. Travel, rocks, and gardening remain my passions. Update for the new year 2019 Medical problems assured my full retirement now. Mayo just gave me the "all-clear" after two years of chasing cancer, and my strength returns, so I'm off to see more of the world. Just enjoyed my 50th Hamline Univ reunion! Homes in StPaul, and in WI - events and culture in the first, crafts and gardens in the other, friends in both. Love to hear from you Edison folks - I think about those times when I'm food shopping around Lowry and Central Ave..... Dick
