Richard's Story

Fairly simple life since HS. If anyone remembers, Mr. Bowman and I had some conflicts, and upon returning to school after our Christmas Vacation 1975, Mr. Bowman decided to tell me I was not welcomed at WSHS, asked me to leave and told me to never return. Although I disagreed, citing there were only a few months left to get my diploma and graduate, it was no use. So I left. Not only did I leave school, I left home and I left the Family Trucking Business and joined the Army. I didn't have to join the Army, but I felt it was the right time for me to serve my Country. It was kind of a tradition for many in my Family. We always felt that if you had the opportunity you should serve the Country in some way. So off I went. After Basic Training, and MOS Training, I did make it home to attend YOUR 1976 Graduation. That was very important to me. I didn't make my presence noticed but I did want to be there to see My Class Graduate. There was a burning in my stomach about being told to leave school so close to Graduation. However, I had new priorities in the Army, but I wasn't going to forget about that Diploma. I made the most of my time in the Army. I went in as a Truck Driver, and was assigned to an Engineer Unit in Ft. Carson, CO. Being assigned to an Engineer Unit led to many opportunities. I learned to use Heavy Construction Machinery (ie: Bull Dozers, Backhoes, Graders etc.). That wasn't enough, and I got into Demolitions. Learning these different fields kept me busy (which is very difficult to do in the Army). While serving, I did and learned so much. I built roads, bridges, demolished buildings. I built a bridge in Casper, Wyoming. I demolished Ent AFB, and did the Heavy Construction Ground Work for the US Olympic Training Grounds in Colorado Springs. I was part of a Chemical Reaction Team, and I did Funeral Duty (Overseeing the Process and Presenting the Flag to the next of Kin). All of this was character building. I still needed My Diploma. In m spare time, I began a campaign to get my Diploma. Although far from a model student, and quite frankly, pretty much a challenge to the school system, I always had good grades. I felt that was very unfair to be denied My Diploma. After writing many letters, to the Superintendent, and the School Board asking them to review my records and my expulsion. After a year and a half, Superintendent Chris Gramaticus called me in Colorado and told me after reviewing my records, and although I spent more time skipping school than attending school my grades were exemplary and I should never have been expelled. He then told me he was revising my records, and sending me my Diploma, dated June 1976. That meant so much to me. I now Graduated the same day as My Class. My time in the Army came to an end. I am one to do things My Way, and that is NOT the Army way. So I served my Country, completed my contract,...Expand for more
and got out. Terri Brawsay, came out to Colorado to meet me and we decided that we would head home, but since we had the opportunity we would take our time and see as much of the country as we could in My Volkswagon Camper Van. I learned to appreciate the beauty of this Country while in Colorado, and was more impressed as me made our journey to other places. If you have not done it, take some time, and drive this Country and see how impressive it is, and how lucky we are to have it. Stop in little towns and talk to people. You will see a completely different Country than what is portrayed in the Daily Media. We have a GREAT Country. Well, Terri and I finally made it home on a Friday afternoon. The following Monday, I was back to work in the Trucking Industry working for my Family again. Since I had a job, Terri and I got married June 15, 1979 and we've been together ever since. My time working for my Family gave me the opportunity to make a reputation in the Trucking Industry, and soon I was receiving job offers from National Companies. More important, Teamster Companies. At the time Terri was pregnant with our 1st child and my Family couldn't provide Health Insurance or a Pension, so I left the Family Business and took a job with a Union Company that could provide Benefits for my new Family. As time went by, the Trucking Industry was tough, and Companies went out of business every few years, but I never went without work. It wasn't easy, but my reputation kept me working as each Company closed. My reputation as a "Worker" was well earned and eventually bit me in the ass. My work ethic of doing my job and getting it done in any way possible ended up with me fracturing my spine, and rupturing 4 discs. Thank God, I made the decision to join the Union because when I broke my back I had enough time in my Pension to Retire. Our Family grew to having 3 Children. Those 3 Children gave us 4 Grandchildren. We are very Proud of or Children. Somehow they grew up without (to many) problems. They never got into drugs or trouble. These days they are good workers with good reputations. The oldest Son is in his 19th year in the Air Force. So these days, I'm mostly home, rarely leaving the yard. Started a Garden to keep me busy and I'm at peace doing it. The Grandkids get a kick out of it. Terri is still working. We take one vacation a year, and that is to attend the Daytona 500. We LOVE Daytona Beach and the Race. Then we head down to Vero Beach where we have Family and spend some time with them. Terri usually fly home to go back to work, and I stay in Vero and Daytona until things warm up back here in New England. Well, this thing asked "What have you been up to?" I think I told it all. lol I'm also on FaceBook as Richard T King - Wilbraham, MA. Stop by and say Hi. It's been fun reconnecting and catching up with people from the 1976 Class.
