Richard's Story

MThe picture is of me & my late wife who passed away 8/19/2007. I was not a happy camper in high school.I had a lot of problems with my family and it showed in my attitude. Was a little wild up until I was about 25.I finally married a woman who didn,t have any issues to resolve or any baggage to haul around.Life has been very good ever since. The biggest plus in my life was moving out of Watsonville! Workplace I worked in the aerospace manufacturing until 1974.At that time I started my own bussiness called CAR COSMETICS.I worked mainly with new car dealers, adding accessories to new cars. Here in southern calif. its a very competitive bussiness. It was a very good living for 22 years.I,m now semi-retired. Military The Navy is a tough life.I wouldnt recommend it to anybody. If I had to do it over I would join the air force. The only thing I enjoyed about the navy was seeing Europe.I went into the navy when I was 17.I could have spent my time being more in tune with what I was doing, but all I wanted was to do my time and get the hell out of there. My wife passed away because the doctor,s missed her colon cancer.I moved to Utah (tryin to make some sense of life)Got here on April 1st 2008-was diagnoed with colon cancer April 5 2008. Life has taken a few weird turns for me lately. I,m in Utah staying with family while I try to work thru colon cancer-I had 2 months of chemo & Radiation treatments (radiation is horrific)-5 hours of surgery to get rid of the cancer-2 months of recuperation and I,m scheduled to go back in the middle of August for one more operation. The doctors all say I,m going to be completely cancer free when they are done. The worst part is the weakness-I have absolutely no energy anymore.I,ve only lost about ten pounds thru all of this, but if any of you remember me-I cant afford to lose that.So far its been 4 months that I,ve been down-the docs say it will be another 8 months before I,m back in shape.I,ve always been in control of my life-its strange to be in this position.A word of warning to all of you out there-GET A COLONOSCOPY EVERY YEAR-I was lucky, for some reason the cancer started bleeding and I went in to find out what was up.If I had,nt ,it would have kept growing and eventually killed me. Okay-an up-date. Its now the end of October & I,m still stuck in Utah fighting this cancer. I,ve just had my final surgery. Was supposed to be in the hospital 2 days, wound up being 7 days. Picked up an infection & now I have to deal with that for another month or two. Unless you want to lose a year out of your life & go thru pure misery for that year get a colonoscopy - if there,s cancer & they catch it early they can laser it out right then. If its been there a while you are going to be in pain for at least a year because of the chemotherapy & the radiation & the surgery. The pain from all of this is unbelievable-every day you wake up wishing you could just stop breathing and let it all be over with.Thank God for my family & friends-without them I wouldn,t have gotten thru this. Another update-its November 2008 and I,m still down. Absolutely unbelievable what cancer can do to you. I,ve not had one decent day since April of 2008.It looks like this is going to go on for at least another 4 months.I,ve got a scar that is 15 inches long running down my chest , another one thats about 8 inches long on my side. The one on my side is taking forever to heal. Its gonna look horrific even then.Cant repeat this enough--GET A COLONOSCOPY-the alternative is winding up like me-losing an entire year of your life to pure misery every day.I,m no different than most of you out there-my wife died from colon cancer in August of 2007-we were both living like most people-never giving a thought to something like colon cancer. Its a little late for us, but not for you--- DO IT!!! One last update-it is now March of 2009-I,m now cancer free & all of the incisions are healed. The inside of my body is taking its time healing. I,m hitting the gym next month to try & regain my strength back.Figure its gonna take a while. Meanwhile I,m still stuck in Utah.I can easily afford to live here on my retirement-BUT- I want badly to move back to SoCal,I,m going to do it as soon as I,m able to work.I lived in SoCal for a lot of years & have a lot of friends there. My kids both live there too. When I move back there I,ll post it here. One cool thing about my cancer is...Expand for more
that I,ve become friends with some one I,ve been a fan of since the early 60,s.Dick Dale-he had colon cancer & I got in contact with him-we have been phoning & e-mailing back & forth for a couple of months now.Can you believe that he will be 72 years old in May & is just now going out on a world tour.Check him out on Youtube. The newest one of him is called Kickoff 2009. It,s him & his son jamming together at the Fender Museum in SoCal. Its great. Okay-time for another up-date. It is now July of 2009 and I,m still stuck in Utah.I,ve been going to the gym every day for the last 3 months and I walk about 3 miles every day-my strength is coming back but it is going so slow its irritating.I want to be back in SoCal. soon.I,m going to try and make it by christmas.Health wise I,m doing great-they have some amazing doctors here in Utah.If this had happened to me in California I dont think I would be alive right now.The mormon church here is a little strange to me but they seem to be invested one way or another in every hospital in the state, which means a lot of money for staff and equipment. The hospital I was in is McKay Dee hospital in Ogden.Fairly new hospital. Okay-this should be the last update on this cancer crap-It is now Sept 2009 & I went into the hospital & was checked out from top to bottom.I,m completly cancer free every where. What a relief.I,m still very weak-my bones ache all the time-Doc,s say its because of all the radiation. With the economy in the toilet in Calif. it doesn,t look like I,m going to get back there till next summer-Bummer.Feb 2012-still in Utah-it doesn,t look like I,ll be going back to SoCal,it,s just too damn exspensive.Bought a truck-now I,m lookin for a house. It's now August of 2012.-still in Utah. Looks like I,m stuck here-it's amazing the difference in the cost of living here as opposed to SoCal.I would rather be in SoCal-but it's just too damn exspensive.Still lookin for a house here.Would you believe that you can still buy a decent hose here for under 100,000.Another up-date-it is now May of 2013. I've given up on ever going back to SoCal-too damn expensive.I'm comfortable here in Utah.My kids are both doing great in SoCal so I dont need to worry about them.My health is great now-dont have the stamina that I used to have, but then who does?I'm still determined to buy a house here-it will happen sooner or later. After reading all of this dont forget to go get a colonoscopy-it sneaks up on you with absolutely no warning. Another up-date-Still in Utah. Got a call from my mortgage company. I'm approved now and can get off my butt and find a decent house. I'm looking in the south-east part of Utah-it's what every one here calls John Wayne country. No big towns-a lot of small ones.Lotsa wide open country.Just missed an absolutely great log home.Hope to find another one.Another up-date. I finally bought a house in Ogden, Utah.My health is still great-I'm finally starting to get some of my stamina back (only taken 5 years) .It looks like I'm going to be here the rest of my life.Got lucky by being here in Utah-housing is still cheap and medical here is top notch.Winters are a little rough but nothings perfect any more. It's now 2016-I've been in my house almost 3 years now.I still wish I was in California but it's not going to happen.Life here is good. I stay in regular contact with my two kids in Calif. Theyare both doing very well.I'm 75 now and healthy so it looks like I'll be spending the rest of my life here in Utah. My last update here. I'm still in Utah-guess I'm never going back to SoCal. I'll be 76 in a few months. My health is great-I see my doctor every 4 months to make sure I stay healthy.Been keeping busy working on my house a lot,A job thats never finished.but it's satise my hose payments are below 500 bucks a month (wow). Cant find that in California. Also found a senior program here that lowered my property taxesto 28 bucks a year (amazing).Alright-it's now Jan 2019 and I'm still in Utah..The winters here are pretty rough but hell that's only about 3 months out of the year. The rest of the year it's pretty nice.I've made a few friends here and that helps-people here aren't as open as California people.Because of my business that I had I get a great social security check every month so I can live very comfortable here in Utah-Looks like I'm gonna be here till I die.. I'm a realist anyway-you cant go back after this long a time and expect things to be the same. In other words I'm content with my life,.I'm still harping to every one I know---get a colonoscopy. If you wind up having to go thru the chemo and radiation and then several surgery's,,your life will never be the same. I'm one of the lucky survivors..
