Richard's Story

After graduating from RLHS in 1962 I joined the U.S. Navy. I spent 20+ years in the Navy living in such places as Kodiak, Alaska; Long Beach, California; Yokosuka, Japan; Antigua, West Indies; Pensacola, Florida and Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean. I spent a total of 8 and a half years onboard USS Bennington, USS Lexington. USS Dash and USS Adroit. I retired from the Navy in September of 1983. While in the Navy, I met and married Lorraine in Long Beach, California. We had two sons, Sam and David who both joined the Navy and are now retired. We just celebrated our 47th anniversary onboard the cruise ship Carnival Dream (April 15). We love cruising, and the Dream was our 20th cruise on Carnival Cruise Lines. After retiring from the Navy I took some time off. I hit all the golf balls I ever cared to hit, and caught all the fish I ever cared to catch. I felt it was time to get back to the real world, and took a job at the Juvenile Justice Center here in Pensacola, Florida. Looking back at my entire working career, this was the most rewarding job I have had. I loved working with the kids, and still correspond with some of them today. I worked there for about a year, but I continually received calls requesting I go back to work for the Navy. I finally gave in and took a Civil Service position as Computer Deck Supervisor at the Naval Communications Station Jacksonville, Florida. While attending training in Jacksonville I met the Vice President of Validity Corp. who was conducting the training. We hit it off very well, and after a short time he invited me to Washington, D.C. to interview for the position of Hardware Acceptance Supervisor. I took the job, and developed and tested communications systems and traveled the world installing the systems and training on all of the systems. I lov...Expand for more
ed the work at Validity Corp, but two years after accepting the position, I got tired of being courted by the Naval Communications Headquarters there in D.C. and when the offered me a position I could not afford to turn down, I moved over the Headquarters. My work at Naval Communications Headquarters caused me to interface with the Defense Communications Agency, and at times I did not know which one I worked for, but the opportunities were fantastic and my prospects for advancement were endless. The travel was endless, and by now I became addicted to travel. In 1996 I was offered the position of Regional Plans Officer for all of Europe and Southwest Asia. We moved to a little town outside Naples, Italy. I was responsible for overseeing all communications from London to Saudi Arabia and the Indian Ocean and everything in between. The travel was marvelous and the people we met were amazing. We have been fortunate to make friends in many countries, and we remain friends even today. We met a couple in the little town of Pescasseroli in the Abruzzi Mountains while living in Italy. They own a hotel and restaurant where we used to stay regularly. If anybody plans to go to Italy on vacation, let me know, and I will put you in touch with Marco and Gerri. We became such good friends that Marco offered his fathers store and apartment to us after his father passed away in 2000. It sure was tempting, but Lorraine¿s father was ill, and we decided to retire on January 15, 2001 at the young age of 57 and return to the States. We moved into the house we had built here in Pensacola back in 1971, and have been living here since. We fill our lives breading Miniature Pinchers, working in the yard, keeping up the fish ponds, doing crafts, and cruising. We take at least three or four cruises a year.
