Richard's Story

Life Nobody ever seems to fill this out so here goes nothing. I guess in this case the beginning was the end of High School. I ran off and joined the Navy where I had a great time. I got to experience port calls in eleven different countries and learned more about the world than any geography/sociology class would or had ever taught me. Unfortunately, I was prematurely released from service for a degenerative knee condition and a strained muscle in my back. Several years later, after following my family to Utah, I found out that the strained muscle in my back was actually a tumor that had grown around my sciatic nerve at the connection to my spine. The tumor was successfully removed at the VA hospital in Salt Lake City, but the steroids used prior to its resection cause Avascular Necrosis in both of my femurs (hips). Basically, the bone in both of my femurs at the hip had died. So another doctor removed both of my fibulas from my lower leg and grafted them into my femur. While mostly successful, I have had to have several revisions, 5 surgeries in all to save my hips, but will eventually have to have them both replace. So if you see me around in a chair or with a cane, it’s not as bad as it looks. Now to the good stuff. While living in Utah and negotiating a few medical mine fields, I attended college at Utah State University. I dual majored in Photography and Sculpture. My photography studies where under a brilliant man by the name of Craig Law who is a premiere zone system photography professor. I also married a young girl named Heather during school. Unfortunately, my increasing medical problems took a toll on both my school work and my marriage. I was forced to leave Utah State and my marriage fell apart shortly after. ttending the University. Dan, Denny Franks (also from Bryan) and I eventually started a screen printing and design company in our basement, called Velocitee, which would eventually grow large enough to be sold to Design Ware, here in Lincoln. Dan went with the company and is still with them today. I on the other hand was eventually retired by the VA as service connected disabled veteran and was given a lifetime pension. Now for the good stuff. Lincoln is where I met my wonderful wife Amy. After a prolonged courtship, we finally married in August of 2003. Together we restored a home is south Lincoln (see photos) which is now a rental property and are finishing the restoration of our current home in Lincoln’s Woods Park neighborhood. We have a beautiful daughter name Lily and have another daughter, on the way this April. These days, I spend much of my time working on our house, where we just completed a new addition. I also restore turn of the century Baptismal, Confirmation and Marriage certificates for Agnus Dei Printing. For fun, I play Golf, take the boat out and like to plunk around in my Bronco. Which brings me to my second love, my fully restore 1971, Bronco (see pic.). I also still love photography and sculpture and have taken to high end video production as a hobby. While I plan to make both a short film and a documentary in the near future, I have currently only done about 6 episodes of a show called The Other Side, which aired on Time Warner Cable here in Lincoln. Well, I think that that is about it, at least for now. I hope to see more bios from others on here. It seems like a great place to keep up with each other. Also, I have been looking for several classmates from the past. If anybody knows where to find Gary Grace (1987) or Roddy Kirchenmann (1986), drop me a line. Be well…… Military Company C155
