Richard Platt:

CLASS OF 1976
Sunnyvale, CA

Richard's Story

I've had an interesting, to say the least, life. After high school I lived in town for awhile until I decided to join the U.S. Navy which I did in August '76. I didn't report to boot camp until February '77 as I was in the delayed entry program. I made it through boot camp with only one "hit" against me for the entire two months. Most people come out with 3 or more. I was then sent to Submarine school inn Groton CT as I had volunteered for service in that branch. I was above average in my studies there. After sub school I was transfered to class "A" & class "C" schools in a place called Dam Neck VA. I was only average in both those schools 'cause I was a little more interested in partying and having a "good time". It was great! After my schools were finished in VA I was sent to Charleston SC which was my last choice of the three bases we had to pick from. I didn't think I was going to like it there and went with an "attitude". I was only there about 2 days before I started to see things differently and found that it didn't matter where I was as long as made the best of what was handed to me. I was assigned to the U.S.S. James Madison SSBN-614 Blue crew and learned very quickly the good and the bad of life in the Navy. I qualified for submarines in one patrol, which is 3 months if you are on a "boomer", which I was. Unfortunately, by the time I got back from my patrol I had decided that the military wasn't for me. I wasn't a very patient person and was very upset that another crew member had got a promotion in front of me only because he was buddies with the men on the promotion board. It really pissed me off and I didn't have the perseverance to wait for the next round of test and decided to go AWOL and see what I could do on my own. I stayed on the lam on and off for nearly 2 years and for the most part enjoyed myself thoroughly. But I finally decided that I must "face the music" and went back to the Navy to "do my time" and get out. I was finally discharged in March 1981, on St. Patrick's day no less, and was free to make my way in the world. For a while I was just happy to be back home and make a living at my old trade, which is electronic assembly. I was trained as an electronic technician in the Navy but found I liked building rather than troubleshooting and repairing broken and defunct equipment. I did this for about 10 years but I was still searching for something that I just couldn't seem to find. I'd been in a couple of relationships but they ended one of them, quite possibly, the best that I'd had. Early in 1991 I moved to Dallas TX to get a new start and try my hands at different things. I didn't care for Dallas much and after just 7 months decided that I'd return to California. I was back for a little over a year and then got an opportunity February1993 to go to St. Paul MN and see what I could do. I loved and still love St. Paul. What a great city! I had a great time while I was there and would probably still be there but the timing was bad and I couldn't find any long term work. So it was back to CA where I could at least find work. I realized that I probably couldn't afford to buy a house in the area I grew up in but at least I could make a bearable living for a while until I decided what to do next. I was doing OK, not bad, not good just the status quo when in April 1994 I ran across an old friend who had unfortunately had burned himself out on drugs and whose older brother was looking for someone to look after him when he was away on business which was quite often. He, the older brother, saw that I seemed to have a calming effect on his brother and asked me if I would mind staying with his brother while he was away. I said sure. After just a couple of months of this arrangement the brother asked me if I would like to move into the spare room and take over full time care taking responsibilities for ...Expand for more
his brother. Once again I said sure. That started a 6years + job that ended up with me finally in upper peninsula Michigan doing household maintenance and repair for him as his brother by this time had become delusional and had to have more professional care. I finally left his employ in May 2000. Once again it was off to CA and the south Bay Area in particular, to see what I could find to do to further myself. It was not the same place I remember. Jobs that used to be plentiful were scarce to nonexistent and I struggled. I went to Bullhead City AZ where my mom was living in October 2001 and tried to make a life for myself there but once again could only find part time work in a book store and left after just 2 months disenchanted and worried. I yet again went to CA and struggle for a while until I finally found full time employment at Hertz Equipment Rental in March 2005. I was, get this, at 47 called a "Wash rack boy", man that cracked me up. I was responsible for power washing all the big equipment such as backhoes, excavators, forklifts, front loaders and a whole lot more. It was a great job and I lasted longer at it than anybody up to that time (and probably since). After vacation in the summer of 2006 I realized that although I loved my job I was only a temporary employee and the management made it clear that they saw no reason to make my job a permanent one even though they could provide no reason for their conclusion. So I decided I would start looking for something else but man had the whole bay area changed. I stayed with Hertz until October 2006 when I got the chance to try my luck in Tucson AZ. I went for it after giving 30 days notice at Hertz because I did like my job and hoped I could maybe come back if I didn't find anything else. Tucson is another city that I love. There is just something about the desert that appeals to me on a basic, primitive level. I don't know what it is, it's just there. Anyway after a couple of temporary jobs I found a job that I was inherently qualified for; cable and harness assembly. It was a great job that didn't pay by the hour but instead by how many units you completed. I didn't really want to go back into the electronics business but the money was fair and my rent was fairly cheap and I only worked 4 days a week. Excellent. I was doing OK but just wasn't happy with standing by and letting life "pas me by". Still I stuck with it until August 2008 when I one more time headed out for CA, although I did make time to go spend a couple of weeks with my grandma and one of my sisters in Winslow AZ before heading to the Golden state. If I thought things had changed in CA I was right...they were even worse than when I'd left. From the time got back until two months later I lived in my car, and let me tell you that Volkswagen Fox's get great gas mileage and have comfortable seats but get old real quick when it's all you have. For the next year and half, from October 2008 until April 2010 I lived with my dad in south San Jose CA. I love my dad but he and I are very different people and it was a tense time. In April 2010 my stepfather died leaving my mom completely dazed and confused (although it was temporary thank God). I got down to where she lives in southern NV and have been with her ever since. Backing up just a little, in July 2009 I was watching a friend of mines house, and had another friend over to take a dip in the pool (you see my buddy is doing pretty well) and we thought that would be a perfect time to put into writing some ideas that we had come up with for comedy/parody songs. It has turned out to be a project that I am proud to say is so close to done and I'm hoping we make some money at. We've got a lawyer, a business license and a few headaches so far but such is the price of (hopefully) fame. Anyway, that's a brief synopsis o what I've done since high school.
