Richard M.'s Story

Graduated from Penn State 1972 in Mass Communications Worked for WYZZ - FM, Wilkes-Barre until July 1975, left the Valley in Aug. 1977 for Cessna's Aircraft Radio & Control division, working in communications electronics and related fields (Design Controls, Bell Labs - Whippany, Contel Cellular, and Vanguard Cellular), along with three short stints in the railroad field (Conrail, Ensco). Become an amateur radio technician in May 1977, and now hold an extra-class license, KR3EE. Am I the only one from the Radio Club that followed through? As my electronics was self-taught (read every electronics book in the WP HS library), i took a refresher course in 1990 at Lincoln Tech in Allentown, and later added a certification in GIS in 2005 at the Pennsylvania School of Technology in York.. Married in 1984, no children. It would be unfair to ask me who I remember... I had a pretty full yearbook of signatures and just spent 8 weeks doing the research to find our classmates for the reunion committee so I recognize many names from our two years together but very few memories of our specific interactions, even amongst 11CP3 and 124 homerooms. I do recognize the quality of our great teachers - Lou Shook (the day before Christmas break's pop quiz), Walter Placek, Harold Chromey, Martha Jones, Phyllis Langford, Catherine Fear, Anna Barnes, Lawrence Brogna (remember the sentence diagrams?) and Marjorie Green (those quadratic equations!).and many others- who gave us a great foundation to build our lives upon. In spite of the few antics in HS, I've generally kept a quiet low profile and have consistently been recognized for the volume and quality of my work output in avionics, photographic printing (a patent), and wireless secure data and cellular service products. Among my community c...Expand for more
ontributions are the restoration of the DL&W RR control tower protecting Analomink St. in East Stroudsburg {search YouTube for Lackawanna Cutoff Part 32 for a tour], assisting in the saving of the Delaware Water Gap station, and the CNJ station in Wilkes-Barre., and numerous contributions to the PAGenWeb pages for Luzerne and Lackawanna County. For over 40 years, I have been associated with various emergency management communications groups in the communities in which I have lived. Dale and I were the last complete set of twins in the 1968 graduating class. Our records in our senior year of track have been long retired. (10.5 in the 100 yd. dash, and 52.3 in the quarter mile.) He passed from COVID on December 2, 2021., three weeks after losing our younger brother Mark to the same. We got to enjoy our 50th class reunion together, and a special treat this past August 22, with a meet and greet at the Gallery of Sound with classmate Bill 'Puppet' Kelly. Does anyone remember his performance in assembly with Carl Belcastro and others doing "The Letter"? Awesome music career with the Bouys and Dakota. As I have chosen not to renew membership in classmates in 2022, my contact information is; richrees at ptd.net. One other hobby not mentioned above, is that I am a member of the North American Railroad Car Operators Association. I own three: a two-man inspector's car from the Erie, an S-2 section car from the Spokane International (both being rebuilt) and an A-3 gang car from the Great Northern Railway at Sandpoint, ID, which is where our great great-grand mother Caroline (Huff) Shales died at the end of 1906. I still have cousins there. This could bring me back to the valley for years as we annually run on the Blue Mountain, Reading and Northern, and the D-L out of Steamtown.
