Richard's Story
Life
After I graduated from Romeoville High, I went into the US Army as a Military Police Officer. After spending 10 years being deployed all over the world, and working as a law enforcement officer, I got out and joined the reserves. While working for the Department of Energy at Argonne National Laboratory, I met my ex-wife Holly who was at Argonne working as an intern. Later that year I moved to Florida where I went to work for Walt Disney World as a security officer and later as an investigator. I went to the Florida Police Academy and after graduation, I decided that I wanted to teach. I finished my bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science. From 2004 till June of 2007 I taught Social Studies in West Palm Beach. In 2007, I taught 7th & 8th Grade Social Studies at the Choir Academy which is a Chicago Charter School. I now teach at Sullivan House High School on Chicago's south side. I now have a better understanding for what teachers across the country go through every day. I am now living in Oswego, IL. On July 28, 2013, I got engaged to Kari Anne. Our wedding was on July 19, 2014.
School
My years at Romeoville High can best be described in one word, band. I was not into my studies as much as I should have been. If I had the grades I now got in college back in high school, I may have gone straight to college in 1987. I learned a lot about life from Mr. Drake which helped during my time in the Army, but I should have put more time into math and science. The best decision that I could have made was right after graduation going into ...Expand for more
the military. I do remember fondly the days of the R-Troop Marching Band and the traveling we did every summer. The members of the band during the 83-86 years were the best that school ever had. Looking forward to seeing them again during the reunion.
College
After I graduated from Romeoville High, I went into the US Army as a Military Police Officer. While being stationed at different Army bases, I attended college. After I left active duty, I went to the Police Academy in Florida. A few months after I graduated from the academy, I realized I wanted to teach either high school or college history/political science. I attended Palm Beach State and received my Associate Degree. I was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society (Delta Omicron Chapter). I received my bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University in history with a minor in political science. While at FAU I became a member Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society (Eta Delta Chapter) and a member of Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society (XI Omega Chapter). In my Senior year was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Phi Alpha Theta Chapter at FAU.
Workplace
After spending my first three years teaching Social Studies in Florida, I have now been teaching in Chicago for the past thirteen years. For the past ten years I have been teaching at Sullivan House Alternative High School. I am looking forward to returning to college for my Master’s degree. I am glad that I changed my profession from law enforcement to education. It is a much more fulfilling profession.
