Richard's Story
After HS, I attended various colleges while working as a computer programmer at China Lake for 12 years, earned a BS in Computer Science, taught graduate classes, and eventually moved to Oregon. After seven years in private industry, I returned to Federal employment. My second marriage was the keeper (>20 years) and I've raised 5 kids. I retired from Government on February 02, 2007 (a birthday present to myself) but I still have some work to do. I haven't traveled as much as Gary Bell but I have toured Japan and visited much of Europe. With the economy rebounding, I am traveling more.
Somehow I managed to remember much of what I learned at Burroughs and it has served me well for the last 40+ years. Life has been good.

It is interesting how certain classes and associations at BHS had such an impact on my life. I took three years of mechanical drawing, initially as a fill-in elective and then because it was an "easy" class. After graduation, I applied at then NWC for a summer job and listed my drafting training. The Navy DID have a job open but it required 2 years of college work. When the offered candidate backed out at the last minute, I got an offe...Expand for more
r. My BHS drafting coursework guided me through a challenging but rewarding job that summer and has been very helpful throughout my life.
I grew up in a Navy family and we were nomads. I averaged nearly 2 different homes and schools each year until we came to China Lake and my step-father retired there. I now tell people that when my parents finally planted roots it was in the Mojave desert. But in those earlier days of living on or near navy bases, I developed an awareness of and interest in naval vessels. When I entered BHS, I soon met George Schneider who everyone came to know as the "ship guy". I became his shadow and followed him into photography. The photo process became my personal copy machine. In a typical writing assignment, I would write about ships and I would tape photos taken of magazine or book pictures. And invariably the teacher would make some comment comparing my work to George's. His was a long shadow. After high school, I continued my routine of including illustrations in my writings. Fortunately the xerographic copy process became available to me followed by computer-based methods. MS Word is my friend, even on my Macintosh.
