Richard's Story
Following high school I enrolled at Cal-State Long Beach. Showing the clearness of my goals, I changed my major four times and eventually emerged with a degree in Radio/Television Broadcasting. Unfortunately, the only careers that the major prepares you for are cameraman and vice president of a network. There being no jobs at the time for cameramen or vice presidents of networks, I did the next best thing and became a meter reader for Southern California Edison. I was about to be married and needed a job. I thought it would be OK until a "really good job" came along.
In the years that followed several really good jobs DID come along, but they were all with Edison. There, I had rewarding careers as an industrial trainer (along the way picking up a Master's degree in Education at Cal-State Long Beach) and eventually as a computer systems analyst. After 25 years, Edison wanted to downsize and offered a retirement package that was "too good to refuse." However, I was not ready to retire for real, so I became a contract programmer for a "rent-a-tech" agency and completed assignments for Taco Bell and Hunt Wesson. After a year, I was hired full time by...Expand for more
Hunt Wesson (which eventually became ConAgra Foods) and wrote computer applications for the sales organization. I had set a goal years before of "really" retiring on my 55th birthday, which I did in 2002.
My first marriage ended after seven years, but I met Tina in 1978 and we were married in 1981. We happily celebrated our 41st anniversary this year. When we retired, Tina and I moved to Oxford, Ohio, home of Miami University. I started a degree in computer science "just for fun," but after a couple of years had to give it up because I could not justify the expense (since I had no intention of going back to work). We have filled our days with volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, Meals-on-Wheels, and the local hospital. We also share a passion for film history and I created and maintain a website on the history of the Academy Awards. For the last ten years I have been involved with the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) where I have presented 20 film series at Miami University, and serve on the ILR Board of Directors.
We currently share our home with the memory of a diabetic cat named (not surprisingly) Oscar and a ghost named Norton.
